Kareneen,
Humans crave variety and you are providing that with your approach to your students. This keeps them engaged and focused.

The best way that has worked for me is self experience. taking my life situations and presenting them in a manner that can be beneficial and informative. This creates a level of being personable without being personal
I do like to share stories, but I also like to show clips from Youtube that show real scenarios of people who work in the field. We then discuss what the workers in the video did correctly or where they need improvement. It helps break up the monotiny of hearing my voice and it still gets the point across and motivates.
I agree keep it exciting hands-on grouped and involved.
Encourage students to focus on their accomplishments and write down self endorsements, it’s a good way to lift themselves up as a opposed to always tearing themselves down…
using examples of careeer satisfaction and check stubs
Motivation techniques may include
Personal or group project.
Taking time to listen to your students concerns

Giving examples of real life situation.
A good tghought. I must try it. But, som think that it is only about the money.

John,
Well said. Knowing you know your student population is an effective way to help all the students in the class to learn. You can customize and target your content as needed as a result of having this information.

I learned that effective motivation needs to be tailored to the individual. College has students young and old: the resulting generation gap means that their values are sometimes different. Clearly understanding how to apply intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors among different age groups will facilitate learning.
we need to share not only our experiences but the fact that ouor careers mimick life itself and our mixed with both success and failure along the way. We need to continue to move forward and learn form both.
James,
Yes, they are. This is why we need to get test results and graded assignments back to students as soon as we can. This way they can see the progress they are making in the course.

I would say the biggest motivating technique would be the instant feedback on test and quizzes. Once they see there score the are motivated to move on and learn the next chapter.
Rodney,
So true. Extra is what it is all about.

Edward,
Thank you for sharing these different instructional strategies with us. They I know will be helpful for other instructors.

Allowing the student to reflect on personal experiences in class can motivate them in the profession as to how it relates.
I laughed about the part on extra credit points, because it is so true. I've had students in the past who have performed poorly when it came to turning in homework. I offered an "extra grade" to help their average if they outlined a chapter in another book that summarized much of the information. I had 100% of the class complete the activity! It was so odd to me though because it was an optional extra grade, yet the idea of "extra" made it special.
Some examples would be sharing a story that relates to the subject matter in real life. Sometimes I will share common stories that intertwine with the learning objectives of the class. Some songs and or movies can be used to relate to the elements to be learned too. You can also offer the small group module as a socializing experience for the students. If there is more than one way to pronounce a name or maybe a prefered shortened version of their name I will ask it in the interest of comfprtable socializing too.
Nancy,
This brings the "real" factor into the class. By sharing these experiences with each other the students learn that they have a person teaching them that has had real world experiences which helps them to understand why you are teaching the content you are. You are showing them the way to career success.

Curtis,
This is because you are giving them a glimpse into their future. They get excited about that and that increases their learning engagement.
