Hi Meher,
I concur! The instructor has to be the best edutainer in the building. Each day the instructor has to sell the student on coming back the next day.

Its the instructors who keep students busy, make the learning interesting and fun for them and hence keep them enrolled in the program.
Hi Lissete,
It sounds like you are experience with retention. It takes the entire college personnel to work retention so that positive results take place.
Patricia Scales
The key players include all staff and instructors at the college campus. It is important to develop relationships with students. In my experience, students have come to me with questions for other departments, personal challenges, grade concerns, and with problems at their externship sites. I find myself coaching, advising students, and motivating them to stay on track with their educational goals. For questions I do not have answers to, I simply direct them to the departments that can provide them with the answer. Students may withdraw from their program if they feel there are no options or resources available to them. Listening, communicating options and resources, and providing assistance to students is important toward retention.
Hi Katessa,
Great response! You are certainly on point! It really takes everyone to work retention. Some students need constant encouragement and others need very little. It is good to know every student so that you better know how to deal with each student.

The key players in keeping students enrolled include: The Instructors, The student, Program Director, and Career Services Associates.
The learning environment for the adult learner is very different from the environment of young learners. The adult learner often has experience in some type of work force and experience within some education. Therefore, it is important that the instructor recognize the attributes of the student as they are entering the classroom. The instructors are responsible for engaging the adult learner and providing them with the opportunity to grow and learn as a student.
The student is responsible for identifying their goals and separating their academic responsibilities and ensuring that they do not effect their non academic responsibilities.
Next, the program director should stay in contact with the student to make sure that they are on track with their academic progress. The program director should make an attempt to have a direct relationship with the student so that they can seek academic counseling as needed.
Lastly, the career services associates should be available to assist the students with personal and professional needs. Career Services should be the outlet for students to seek help in all aspects of their needs.
In conclusion, when all key players stay actively involved with the student it does increase the possibility of retention.
I believe the most important person to help keep the students in school is the instructor. We are on the front line with the students every day. We have the greatest chance to make a positive influence on our students. I always try to make sure the students know that their education is a priority to me. Basically respect the students and provide a proper education in a manner thats both interesting and easy to understand.
Hi Jaime,
The entire personnel needs to provide a positive environment for students.

Hi Gladys,
Even adult students need a strong support system.
Patricia Scales
The key players, besides the student, are the instructor, student services, and academic advisor. Each one has a role to play in monitoring the student's progress, and keeping the institution in constant touch with the student to monitor the student's atitude as well as academic progress. Students do need to know that there is someone, even better a team, providing support on their educational journey.
I believe everyone in the staff of the educational institute is a key player in keeping students enrolled throughout their programs. The admissions department is the students guidance during their time in the institute. The employment is a key player to help them with job lead, so that the student can have an income to support their everyday needs. The finanical aid department is a key player to help the student receive the most money they can receive to afford school. The education department is a key player to provide the best education experience for the student. Everyone that is a staff member is a key player in any educational school, or institute.
The entire staff of the institute are key players. The admission, finanical aid, employment, resource center, accounting and education departments are key players. These department need to be insnyc with each other and their goals. The instructor needs to provide a positive learning environment, just as much as other departments need to provide a positive experience with the customers, (the students).
Hi Larry,
It is amazing the lives I have seen over my 24 years of teaching transform into productive successful citizens. We are in the business to make a difference.
Patricia Scales
I also agree that they have not had much guidance in life and we as teachers have alot to do with them in a short time. But try to keeep them motivated and on track and they usually suceed.
Hi Kevin,
I love your perspective! Our students need as many positive role models as possible. We need to lead by example and serve as great role models. Our students need to know that we genuinely care about them.
Patricia Scales
Clive is right, A lot of the students we get come from broken homes and have no positive role models in their lives. We as instructors not only have to teach but also be role models mentors. etc...
I've found through my years of teaching that a lot of these students just want someone to listen to them. By giving them a moment to let it out helps them focus more in the classroom. I've had several students come to me who aren't even in my class come to me asking if I have a moment that they need to talk to someone.
You just have to be careful not to cross the line and get to involved in their personal life.
Hi Tierra,
Being proactive is a must when trying to managing retention. You know the signs of potential retention problems.
Patricia Scales
I feel that once students are enrolled they are then handed over to there instructors. Instructors play a major role in student retention. We have to be proactive in situations and keep a close eye on all of our students. Personally if I notice change in any one of ny students in grade, attendance, attitude, etc. I make sure that we have a meeting to discuss what is going on and what I can do to help. Instructors must show concern and compassion for students.
Hi David,
Students need to surround themselves with positive peers and seek strong guidance from staff/faculty.
Patricia Scales
Everyone involved in family as well in the school. Students can pull students down as well as up. It is best if you do not send students on a wild goose chase for an answer.
