All of the staff that works with student needs are critical to keeping students in school. The Instructor is with them the most but financial aid, services and employment can also affect the experience of the student.

Everyone who the student intaracts with is a key player. Every idividual that the student meets or deals with can give that student a positive or negative feeling. This is from day one with the people enrolling the student to student services that assists the student if help is needed. The person who spends the most time with the student is of course the instructor, so that person may have the biggest impact on the student.

Hi Lyle,
It certainly is everyone's responsibility to help manage retention. It takes a village to work retention.

The key players in keeping students enrolled is everyone at the school. The interaction of the staff at student services, employment services, finacial aid and the instructors all interact with the students and assist them with any issues they may have so they can continue their education.
The instructors may see them on a daily basis and can sometimes sense a student is experiencing a difficult time Or the student may confide in them about a situation that they (the student) deem insurmountable. In either case the instuctor can usually guide them to where they can go for help.

Hi Daniel,
I concur! Most of the time students will give their instructors the utmost respect. If you respect your students most of the time they will in turn respect you.

Hi Rhonda,
I agree! It begins in admissions. If admissions feel as though the student is not ready for whatever reason, the process needs to end because it will end up being a retention issue.

Hi Gwendolyn,
Students like to fell a sense of importance. Everyone likes to be known by name. It seem like when you are known by name you have a reputation to up hold.

I also feel the instructors are the key here. However they need to feel connected and motivated by management also (dean, assitant dean etc...) They need to feel they can go to them along with instructors. I have noticed that when a student knows the managment as well are known by name from management, they seem to do better...

The instructor has a major part in the student retention but I also believe the admissions dept has to have the know to recognize the adult learner who are willing to commit to the program

David,
I totally agree with you. Students sometimes don't have any other guidance than from the instructor...at school or at home. As long as we treat them the way we would want to be treated, they seem to give us more respect.

Hi Drexel,
The outside plays a big role with retetion. Our students have a lot going on personally, and the first thing they want to let go of when things fall apart personally is school.

Patricia Scales

As an Instructor I think that the overall emphasis to stay with or in a program remains with the instructor but there is and can be outside hindrances and influences that guide the students decisions.

Hi Stephen,
Teamwork is certainly paramount when it comes to retention. Everyone plays a vital role.

Patricia Scales

Everyone working as a team. Each has their own specific job to keep the student engaged in school.

Hi Craig,
Instructor spend more time with students more than anyone else in the building. The instructor is always on the pry to play detective.

Patricia Scales

Hi Katie,
Everyone has to do their due diligence to help with retention. Retention is definitely a constant battle.

Hi Jerry,
A good leader understands the importance of getting everyone involved to help manage retention. Retention takes the efforts of all.

Hi Patricia,

Our campus president is always reminding us that it definitely takes a "village" to help our students succeed. More important, because learning theorists outline the many different barriers adult learners encounter, student services seems to have a major impact on retention figures.

All departments are key players to keeping a student in school. It starts when the student walks in the door addmissions, teachers, career services, and FA. If any department does not do what is needed it could affect the student staying in school or not.

WE as Instructors are with the student more than others we see different things that some do not. As in behavier changes that something is wrong in there life. We might be of some help.
