You're right Steven. Sometimes meetings can eat up too much time in your schedule. When you get invited to a meeting, I recommend asking the organizer if you really need to be there. Often a good test is to ask if the meeting can start without you. If it can, you probably don't need to be there!
The administration can definitely raise stress levels at times. Sometimes unrealistic time allotments or sitting in an unnecessary meeting when I have more important things to accomplish is probably my biggest stessor. Sometimes I just have to accept the reality that certain things are just not going to get done when I expected them to.
I think the single biggest stressor in my "work life" is allowing myself to become stressed by things that really don't matter. The old "don't sweat the small stuff" idea has never been one that I do real well. If I could let the "gravity issues" fall where they may, and realize I can't control them, I'd be a lot less stressed.
This sounds frustrating Lyle. Many instructors deal with challenges that relate to their accreditation and retention goals.
Dealing with adminstration standards or how they want things done. I do understand that for accreditation reasons things may need to be done in a certain fashion but some of the things are just over the top and what I refer to as micro-managing. Give us the tools to do are job and put a little trust in us that the students will learn.
Wow! jeff, in this economy? I do agree that the supervisory and administrative types oftimes have little or no communication skills and certainly no training skills. Imagine what a stress relief you would have to see them in front of your class for one day. That my friend is a stress reliever.
Administration by far. Are all administrations so incable of communicating effectivly? This is the only school i have worked at but OMG they are truly ineffective at communication. If I performed this in adequately I hope i would be fired.
I do not have alot of stress in my life. My career is a challenge not a stressor. I try to build adventure everyday in my job. This helps break down the stress level and actually help you accompolish tasks.
Steve, You ask a lot of great questions in your forum replies. I'd like to hear some of your answers to these questions. Which remedies do you use to eliminate stressors you experience today?
