IDE (Instructional Delivery Expert)
What do you do to maintain your status as an Instructional Delivery Expert? What areas do you think most instructors could use help with?
Hi Shannon,
Students love it when you make learning fun and you reach them through the best way they learn.
Patricia Scales
I try to appeal to each of the different style of learning; auditory, visual and kinesthetic. I also like to make my classes and fun as well as educational!
I don't actually teach a class but I do present information about our Learning Resource Center to all new students. To maintain my status as an IDE, I ensure that I know the information I am presenting. I try to anticipate any questions the students may have so that I can provide accurrate responses. As services and procedures offered by the LRC change, I make certain to update the information I present to the students. I think an area most instructors could use help with would probably be presentation skills because not everyone is comfortable presenting to groups of people, even if they are very knowledgable about the information they are presenting.
Hi David,
It certainly is valuable to see/watch how your colleagues conduct their classes. We can certainly learn a lot from each other.

I enjoy sitting in on other classes to listen to the delivery from the instructor and the comprehension of the student. I try to find something positive in every presentation and begin using it. I believe it is very important from time to time to ask students questions to make sure they are following before moving on to the next topic.
I try to sit in and listen to other instructors, to pick up ideas as far as changing presentation. My team meets evrey three weeks and we will share "best practices" as they come up.
I also keep tabs on any new information that will be useful in the subjects I teach.
I think instructors could use a more opportunities to sit in with other classes to perhaps glean information that may be carried over to their own courses.
I try to stay on course with my syllabus, but i think time is the major problem instructors have.
Hi Jeffrey,
Trust is everything. Whenever students trust you, they are more accepting of changes, if need be.
Patricia
I make the class schedule and I am very clear in how I want all labs tests done. And reassure the students by example that there is no hidden rules and unessary punishments to be handed out. I feel by being consistant and up front with the students they know what to expect and have no issues with minor changes because a trust has been built between the deliverer and the recipient.
Hi Humberto,
Interesting! I've been teaching for 20 years, and I've never taught the same class the same way twice, simply because each class has different students...
Patricia
I always study and consider my audience before and during presentations. Appealing as to how people prefer to learn or receive information are vital elements of being and IDE. I believe in having the little bag of trick for those unexpected moments to raise or maintain interest.
I believe most instructor could benefit from more prep time. Often I see them going in to class with the same old routine expecting that will always work. It times it seems so scripted and mechanical that even the students can see right though it.
Hi Chuck,
It appears that you are finding ways to make you better at your profession. Students are always interested in technology because they know it is the wave of the future.
Patricia
I try to sit in on other instructors classes. this includes visiting instructors. I also try to attend training classes for new material and techniquies in my subject areas. I have found that students become engaged when comparisons between the newest technology and current comparisions are made.
What we can use help with is geting around the student resistance
Hi Tom,
I like the way you go about the whole respect thing. Students want to be respected, and they should be respected. You really do have to work to earn respect.
Patricia
I establish myself as an industry expert that will help them to achieve their goals. I set down a plan for the class which includes a detailed list of my expectations for them and also what they can expect from me. I tell the class they will always be treated with respect in my class. (by me and their classmates) I also require their respect, and I work to earn it.
Hi Dave,
As educators, it is always good when we can pick each other's brain. It is amazing what you can learn from another instructor.
Patricia
To maintain my status as an Instructional Delivery Exerpt, I keep my ASE Certification current. I also attend several hours of training classes each year to stay technically current. I think observation and communication with other instructors is benefical for all instructors. Receiving feedback from each other helps with innovation in the classroom.
Hi Misty,
Time management and preparation are two challenging areas for instructors, especially new instructors. I find myself giving pointers to new instructors in these two areas more than any other area. The two areas do get better with time for most instructors.
Patricia
Continuing with my education is how I maintain my status in this area. In the classes I attend we are always required to prepare and facilitate a part of the course as well as some impromptu discussions. Areas that I see instructors could use help is time management and preparation.
