I will admit it was my number two offspring that showed me how to use Power Point. She is a wizard creating PPT's. I got hooked on PPT's after that. Who says we can't learn from our children or children in general?

Rolando

Hi Rebecca,
What are your intentions to implement any of the fine ideas?
Patricia

Hi Rebecca,
How do you feel this activity focuses on relaxation and teamwork?
Patricia

Hi Rebecca,
I create a rubric for each class. The instructor uses their discretion as to what should be weighed heavily or not.
Patricia

I like your idea of offering a syllabus quiz. This would encourage the students to read the syllabus and find answers for themselves. My personal goal is to help the career student become more self sufficent.

I also like the example you have set by not allowing late work.

Do you create the rubric for each objective? I mean to ask..is your rubric newely created for each class or do you use a generalized rubric?
If each rubric is new,how do I learn to create a rubric?
Rebecca w

I liked the suggestion of using paper airplanes to relax the class as well as build teamwork.

During the first day of class I go over the course requirements and my expectations, I feild any and all questions, I give assignments, due dates, projects, lectures, test dates, lab dates.
I have found that outlining on the board the days events keeps the students informed and the more they know the better they perform. I leaves very little for them to question.

I have a very simple table that I include on the first page of my syllabus. The table shows the points given for all assignments and notes the late policies if applicable. It also shows the total points for the class. Students can clearly see what each assignment is worth and how skipping it could impact their final grade.

As my classes are fairly short and over a great deal of material in brief span of time. Clearly articulating course requiremets is paramount. On the first session student are provided with a written listing of all requirement, assignments and due dates, and we talk briefly about them as well. Throughout the class, I will remind as deadlines near and urge them to manage their time wisely.

Hi Terry,
You customize each class, which is great. You do not have a one size fit all approach. Great job!
Patricia

Hi Rolando,
Yes, PowerPoint is an awesome teaching tool because it does appeal to all type of learners. Imagine how life was without PowerPoint.
Patricia

Hi Laquita,
It is important for everyone to be on the same page so that there is no confusion.
Patricia

I have been teaching for the last four years and each of my classes are different so I have to take a different approach for each class.

When I teach my accounting classes, I had out a class description sheet along with the syllabus and assignment schedule. My class description sheet for accounting goes into detail of what will be covered in each chapter and what assessments will be used for each chapter.

When I teach my principles of marketing or principles of management classes, I will give the syllabus, and the assignment sheet, but then I will go into detail about how important the classes are for them because what they learn in these classes will continue for the rest of their majors. I explain each area that we will cover and how it will apply later when they do their group project in my class.

My Microsoft Office classes are a little different. I will give them their syllabus and assignment sheet, but then explain the importance of the Microsoft Office programs and how once they learn one type, it will be used in all Microsoft Office programs.

Thanks,
Terry

Hi James,
What do you do to make course requirements clear for your students?
Patricia

Hi Shantelle,
Your students should really appreciate your caring attitude. You set your students up to SUCCEED. Great job!
Patricia

Hi Timothy,
Students need to and should be given clear course requirements. There should not be any room left for guessing.
Patricia

Hi Thomas,
You certainly want to see your students succeed. You make things very clear.
Patricia

Making course requirements clear, helps to enhance information flow and understanding, aids in labs projects, and gives the student a clear understanding of what is expected of him.

I give them a written copy of the class grading criteria, the lab grading criteria, a course calander, and then I explain the requirements in detail. I let them know which tests are going to be the most challenging for them and tell them exactly what is needed to sucessfully complete the course.
