The syllabus is the first thing I use to make sure the students know what is required...as we are talking through everything I will let them know if there are important elements, such as the course requirements (participation, assignments, projects, turning things in on time, etc.) After the first day I will reiterate particular requirements as we go through the course, if there is something important coming up, to make sure they remember and understand what is expected. I also post reminders, grading rubrics and notices to the class portal as well as print up handouts before an assignment/project is due so they understand what is expected and know how they will be graded.
Course schedule lays course out complete.
Review the syllabus and go over class rules so we are all on the same page. Do this whenever needed!
I believe that going through the syllabus with the students, explaining expectations and outcomes of every section of the syllabus and the grading rubric of each (if different); this leaves little room for doubt and make the students feel involved. I ensure that I leave no stone unturned and try to answer any questions concerning the requirements at that time and also make myself available at any time when doubts or concerns arise. This technique I always employed while teaching in a traditional classroom environment. Now, I'll be teaching online. I believe the venue does not change the purpose of clarifying course requirements to students. The use of audiovisuals would definitely come into play here, specially when breaking down the syllabus into sections. Power Point is my preferred method of audiovisual. I find it keeps the student enthralled and this method appeals to every type of learner.
Hello Sabrina,
Wow, you are so thorough! If I was a student in your class, I would certainly appreciate your thoroughness. You cover all bases. Everything is crystal clear, there is no grey. Super!!
Patricia
Hi Gary,
It appears you are very structured. Our students need structure to ensure clarity and quality.
Patricia
The way we write up an assignment is key to having students complete what is required. The assignment needs to be linked to a template (for Individual work), a grading criteria, TCOs & the course grading rubric.
SHOW ME THE MONEY. LET’S TALK PRICING.
Thus far we have developed a quality product and made it available to end users through an effective distribution system. Now it’s time to price the product.
MAIN DISCUSSION POST: Due by Sunday
Develop a pricing strategy for your chosen product/service.
1. Discuss what factors will impact your pricing strategy.
2. What pricing method would you use for your product/service and why?
These two questions require research using the textbook (Chapter 9). No other resources are required. Citations and a reference list are required for this post.
Your main post on the discussion must be submitted by Sunday. The post should be 2-3 paragraphs in length (or at least 250 words)
INTERACTIVE RESPONSES: Due by Sunday
Please respond to at least two other student postings by addressing the following:
1. Do you agree with the factors identified? Why or why not?
2. Suggest a price adjustment strategy that could be used for this product when sales growth slows down for this product/service in the future.
• Each reply should be one paragraph in length (or at least 75 words) and must be substantive in nature. Do not simply say why you agree or disagree, specify why and be detailed in your explanation. You may use research in your responses but it is not required.
Your replies to at least two other student posts must be submitted by Sunday. Each post should be 1 paragraph in length (or at least 75 words)
You will be graded on the quality and interactivity of your work. Use of unoriginal text and excessive quotes indicates a lack of comprehension and shows that you may not have mastered the concepts.
Submitting all your posts in one sitting, or within a compressed time period, will adversely affect your interactivity.

The Measurable Terminal Course Objectives (TCOs) for the Unit 4 Discussion Board:
• Explain how changes in xxx (TCO 3)
• Describe and apply the elements xxxs (TCO 7)
• Describe and apply the elements xxx (TCO 8)
At our school, each course has an MCO (Master Course Objectives). This is a very high level document that might list 4 to 10 items that are to be mastered throughout the course. Then we (the instructors) take those and put more specific descriptions to it. Along with these objectives, we also outline our specific expectations for attendance, timeliness, late homework, grading, and finally, the school policy for cheating. To support the specific assignments, which are listed in the syllabus, I provide a rubric for each type of assignment. This will tell them how many points APA formatting is worth in a paper for example.
Hi Jennifer,
Your students should fully understand what is required of them. You cover all bases.
Patricia
Hello Gary,
What do you typically do with the syllabus to make course requirements clear?
Patricia
I post the course expectations as a word document for the students in the instructor files before the course starts. I also create a PPT that has the course expectations and use this during the first live chat.
Showing specific examples and a rubric.
Hi Dennis,
You clearly communicate with your students what is expected of them. There seem to be no gray areas with you. Students know up front their requirements.
Patricia
When making course requirements clear for students I find it necessary to list requirements on the board, printed in a hand out for the students to keep in their note books, and verbally discuss course requirements with class fielding any questions or concerns that they may have.
Through out the course of study students are advised in written format and verbal when the requirements are not being met.
Hi Jan,
The students are in college now. They should be able to read the syllabus on their own, and as you have stated, if there are any questions, they can ask. You spend your time on the first day bonding and sharing personalities. I like the idea.
Patricia
Hello Jimmy,
Spending quality time in this area saves a lot of time later. Students know exactly what is required of them up front.
Patricia
Hi Detra,
You are so thorough. I am sure your students appreciate you. Rubrics are great! When a rubric is available, a student should have a good idea of their grade before hand.
Patricia
Hi Detra,
The highlighting makes things stand out and some students need this.
Patricia
Hi Detra,
Most of the time students will not read the syllabus on their own will. This ensures reading and understanding.
Patricia
Hello Detra,
Not silly at all! I do this from time to time too.
Patricia
