It can be a useful tool to show the difference between A and B or C work. Examples are a perfect rubric to show a student the difference between following the directions and going the "extra mile." Most students feel entitled to receive an A even though they may have done the minimum requirements.

So they can understand expectations and outcomes of the class

Good point. I believe we're in a point in time where people want to see what in it for them in order to trully benefit from a course.

Examples are good to show the students so they can see and hold the work, understand it better and understand the value to their future. It is the ' what will I get out of this'

I want to show them that, hey, people just like them were able to do these projects! Yes, I want to model good projects for them and give them examples to strive for, but I also want to show them something more fundamental - that these projects ARE in fact doable. Showing a great project to emulate is predicated on the assumption that the student agrees that the project can be completed. Showing them these completed projects not only gives them the model to strive for, but reinforces that the assignments themselves are not unreasonable.
Of course, I also distribute examples of "flawed" projects, to show the range of approaches to the assignment. It can be very intimidating to see only the best of the best. Seeing some, ah, less successful examples can be very empowering. The student can usually see right away how their own eventual projects will be superior, and that in itself is very motivational.

Hi Germain,
Students appreciate being shown an example as to what is expected. Students tend to get a better understanding from a visual.

Hi Bill,
Visualization is good for students. They seem to get the big picture whenever they can see it.
Patricia

Hi Peter,
Let them know you have examples of A, C, and F work, but they would need to get with you to setup a time so that you can fully explain each example.

Hi Mariann,
Demonstrations have proven to be a very effective learning tool. Students love to see demonstrations.
Patricia

Hi Ty,
I like the idea because this is what they will truly will be doing in this field. It is good for the students to get experience as being the customer as well as the server.

I teach the front house practical; this entails the students to wait tables serving the general public. At first there is an air of incredible anxiety from some of the students. I find that by splitting them up as customers and servers and then having them practise on each other helps allieviate this anxiety.

I agree that one of the learning styles students learn best from are demonstrations. Since I am a nursing instructor I have demnonstration and repeat demonstrations almost every day.

I agree when I do orientation I show videos about the nursing floor we will be on and the patients the students will be taking care of. This helps them understand some of what will be required of them before entering the pts, rooms.

Hi Peter,
I firmly believe that a great characteristic of an effective teacher is creativity. Sometimes we have to go outside of the box and include creativity.
Patricia

Hi Mariann,
Videos are great teaching tools. Students love the nice icebreaker, but at the same time, they are learning. Visual and auditory learners, especially love videos.
Patricia

I agree with showing videos on orientation day. On my first 2 days of clinical nursing rotations I show students videos of the type of patients we are caring for. This brings up a questions and answer format and following this some of the students fears are decread.

Hi Dianne,

If only you could have been one of my Chef Instructor's back in 1984 when I was introduced to the world of Culinary Arts at J&W. What an excellent way to introduce your first time students to both your class and your personal creativity. Bravo!!

My own personal learning style is visual. I learn best by seeing a task demonstrated, being allowed to practice the task, and then recieve feedback on the results.

It seems that everyone has a syllabus and they get one for each class, which is good. Some students need the written word for their goals, objectives, topics and policies of the course for them to feel connected and get comfortable. What I also do for those that are more visual is from the class before I take hundreds of pictures of the students in action in the kitchen and put it in video form with music. On the first day of class I show a little bit of the video to the new students to get them hooked and emotionally drawn in to the learning. It is very helpful for the students to see what others have done and what they will be doing themselves. The excitement is in the air. They are ready!

Demonstrations are very important in the nursing field as well. I demonstrate how to do various skills and students from previous classes also demonstrate what they have learned. This shows the new students that the older students have been successful in acquiring the necessaary skills and soon they will also.
