Hi Cara,
Yes, I love to see the excitement whenever it is being shared as to the product they will produce. Students really get motivated by seeing an example.
Patricia

Patricia,
Showing students an example of the "end state" allows them to determine the level of effort required, allocate the time necessary, and to prioritize research/study requirements. Depending on whether the student is traditional or an "Adult Learner", competing work/course requirements may conflict with your intended result. By providing an example, you alleviate any potential misunderstanding.

cheers,
Greg

I think it is helpful for the learners to understand the criteria and detail to the criteria more clearly. It will also give the instructor opportunities to clarify expectations and what it will take to complete the class. It answers questions about what is A, B, C, D and failing work within the confines of the syllabus and time deadlines for each evaluated element.

At the end of each pastry course we have a portfolio requirement. Once I adopted the process of showing the portfolios that achieved an excellent grade, the portfolios improved dramatically.

I tell them these are things they are going to make. Many of my students have never seen these items before and to know that soon they will make these amazing things gets them really excited

it really eexcites the student past and present. I have my past students send me pictures of all their baked products we made in class and then i show it to my new class in a slideshow. I explain that these were all made by students in my class

it is good to show examples cause when they see it they have a better understanding and are more prepared to what they have to do.

Hi Mariann,
What type of reactions do you get from students from being shown examples?
Patricia

Hi Marie-Anne,
Great confidence builder! Students may think . . . wow, if they can do it, then I can do it too. We want our students to believe in themselves.
Patricia

I 100% agree with this, that way, the students know exactly what is a perfect example of what will be expected of them, plus, to see that the "project" can be successfully accomplished by a peer.

It is important because it establishes expectations and also sparks questions. It will be better to show the students work examples and also walk them through the rubric at the same time.

As I havre previously discussed I show students examples of previous students cases studies to help them understand what is required of them.

When administering case studies I go over the entire package with the students. I explain what previous students have missed. I also distribute nursing care plans from previous students that were done well. This allows students to see what is required of them and decreases further anxiety.

by showing examples of the work students have a visual example of how their work should look. In the automotive field that is extremely important especially if you have a number of visual learners in your group. Even the hands on learners benifit by looking at the finished product so that they can touch and see at the same time.

If they can see examples of how the work applys to the couse then they can see the benefit of the couse and how they wiil apply what they have learned and be more confident in achieving their goals

I believe it is very important for students to see examples of work. It helps them visualize and get a clear idea of what type and level of work is expected!

It is important to show students examples of the work so that they may have an understanding of what is expected.

It helps to prepare the students for the up coming lecture and lab.

This will allow students to understand what is expected of them and decrease their initial anxiety.

A key to adult education is to answer the question: What's in it for me? from the student's perspective. The student's opportunity cost (what else they could be doing to advance their career goals) is directly linked to this answer. If the answer is, "Not much" their motivation, performance and output will be suboptimal.
