As a visual learner myself, it helps me to be able to "look at" the work...I can then work on the steps to get there. I think it makes things more concrete and applicable.

Great commentary, thank you for sharing.

Showing examples will help reduce anxiety and questions students may feel about successfully completing the course, also can help them plan to meet class requierments as well as engage them in the class from the beginning

it acts as a model and makes student feel aware of what they should be doing. It acts as a guide to prevent mistakes and know to implement proper proceedures

Thank you for that perspective!

How do you avoid feelings of inadequacy by students who don't yet possess the confidence to recognize this technique as a tool?

I find that showing the students examples of work eases the anxiety and the whole "wondering what it is about" that everyone feels when they are starting something new. From that point they maybe able to also get a feel for how much they already know about the subject, or topic and can even possibly prepare themselves in advance. With that in mind it will give them a feel of how much study time they may need.

It is important to show examples of student work for a number of reasons. First, it gives the students an idea of the "acceptable" work required for the course. Second, it stands as a foundation for those students who are interested in building on the "acceptable" and molding it into "great". Third, it permits learning to advance through stages as the student continues to improve the quality of their work during the span of the course.

I fell it's a good idea so students have an idea of what to expect. Students like to know whats coming so they can prepare maybe read ahead and be more prepared. Some people are visual learners so showing them helps.

Sometimes in a course they will be doing some exciting or unusual things so it excites the class to see "previews of coming features". They can also see how the beginning basic steps are valuable to build the steps for the "cool stuff". You have to be careful not to overdo it so that they are overwhelmed and say "I could never do that". You must always show that success is possible.

Hi Scott,
Great clarity is added whenever examples are shown, and students get really excited/motivated to get started. Seeing the finished product is a great visual for students.

Hi Deborah,
Great way to keep students focused and excited. They have something to look forward to.

Hi Thomas,
Very good thing to do! Students really appreciate examples that are shared because they get a visual, which provides for a better understanding.

Hi Larry,
Students like it whenever they have a guide to follow. Examples make things real clear to students.

in some cases it gives them a blueprint of what I am looking for on there assignments
it also gives me an opening to explain how the assigment was done i.e. coming up with food cost% and how to adjust them.

I find that if you inform the students What is comming down the line in the course, it gets them into a learning/studying mode so to speak, It also helps the student that is a self motavator to look ahead and to prepare for what they know is comming,in the same instance it helps the students that fall behind a bit to also see what is comming and to try to prepare also.It is just an all around good thing to do.

I have shown examples of storyboards for psychiatric disorders and meds, and I have not shown examples. It greatly enhances the student's understanding of expectations and alleviates some of the anxiety of not knowing what the instructor wants.

It is important so that the student knows what to expect.

To give the student an idea of what is expected. I have found that many students will "over-think" even the simplest assignment and make it hard.

To excite them and make sure they know what to expect!!
