Hi Richard,
The examples serve as great visuals. Students get really excited whenever they can see something.
Patricia
Whenever a person is interested in educating themselves, they will be more involved in the class if they understand what is in their future. A student who wants to obtain knowledge will be more concerned with the class and the instructor if the instructor shows examples rather than just giving information on pictures or words in lecture.
Hi Kerry,
Our students need all the preparation they can get. We must thoroughly prepare them for the real world.
Patricia
To give a visual understanding of the assignment.
This helps them get prepared for the real world once they graduate.
Hi Joseph,
This also ensures confidence when students are shown an example. Some students need the extra guidance.
Patricia
Hi Chris,
Students have to believe in us, and we must do everything to instill great confidence in our students that we are knowledgeable and professional.
Patricia
It is a great way for students to see the potential of their learning in the class room. I teach in a Culinary school and the specific class I teach, we focus on the components of a plate, such as sauces, vegetables, and starches. I like to show plates utilizing all these procedures together so the students can visiualize what can be accomplished when all they complete the class.
I agree Jeff, it does show the quality of work you are expecting. I think it also shows the students that we, as Instructors, can show the students we know what we are doing and with that said, instill some confidence in our students about the career choice(s) that they made. Good comments, Chris Graves.
Nice example Robert! Keeping the students engage is extremely important, and this will test their knowledge level. I teach online courses and we use MS Word and PowerPoint, and the best way to show my students how to use these programs is to go through each piece step-by-step, while asking questions along the way. If that doesn't work, I tend to have one-on-one sessions with the students that don't understand the programs and walk them through each process. It works fairly well and allows me the opportunity to assess their skills as well as determine the different types of learning activities that will be beneficial for them. Good posting, Chris Graves.
Hello David,
I agree with your assessment. There is truly something to be said about showing examples. Some students learn via observation, listening, etc., but in my opinion, most students can grasp the theories much better if they have the opportunity to actually work through them. Good posting, Chris Graves.
It is helpful to show students examples of the work they will be performing in upcoming courses for a few reasons. First, it gives them the opportunity to see what they will be doing in their choice of career. Second, it gives the students an opportunity to apply their knowledge, through exercises, in order to see if they can grasp what they need to do in their chosen career. Lastly, it helps give the students the ability to see if they can work with through processes in their chosen career or if they need to consider other options for studying or a new career choice. Of course, in my opinion, it is always dependent on the Instructor to show the students how to properly apply their skills so they can move forward and get ahead in life. Thanks, Chris Graves.
Hi John,
Absolutely! It helps when students see the big picture from the beginning! They know what the end result should be.
Patricia
Of course-this makes the student feel proud of what he is doing.
Will help other students gain knowledge as well
It allows for the students to have an idea of what we will be doing in the next few weeks. I often find out that they need a reason to learn and that they need to know that the things they are learning can be applied to their career. Viewing finished examples shows students how their work will come together in the end. This helps to convince students that their efforts will pay off and that the course is worth their time.
I alsways show students previous stdents work to set expectations and excitement about content to be learned
To help out the visual learners and to keep the class engaged in the learning process.
I think this would be a great way to reduce anxiety and promote comfort with the class. This method would familiarize students with expectations. Students need to know what I would want from them.

Hi Freda,
Competition can be a good thing in my opinion. It can make a student want to go above and beyond.
Patricia
As has been stated, showing examples of student work is helpful to ease students into an assignment and allow them to see a range of expectations; however, many students may also use singular examples as a crutch to which they constantly lean. To allay their fears about failing without giving them only one way to complete an assignment, it is important to give students varying examples of student work to see the variety in successful completion.
