I think it can give the student something to work towards if you display a prior piece of good work from the class. On the other hand you can display an example of a poor piece of work in otder to show the students that there were others who didn't understand an assignment but point out why the assignment was improperly done, or what was wrong with the assignment. Sometimes it gives students a starting point or an idea of what they might prepare.

Hi Mark,
We should want to make things as visual for our students as possible because the majority of the learners are visual.
Patricia

This would be a good idea because some students maybe visual learners and posting instructions may not be enough. When I assign essays for my students and I want it completed in a certain format, I would post a completed paper showing the style so students will have a model to follow.

I agree!! It is important for students to see examples at each level of a rubric so that they have a framework to know what quality work looks like, and to know the instructor's expectation for the work. It is beneficial to do this as a whole class discussion rather than simply giving work samples in a packet. The class dicussion can be a catalyst for additional clarification and spark to individual ideas and creativity.

Students understand best by example. They become motivated.

So they can put it in the context of what they'll be doing for real-world work.

it helps with expectations....gives them a better idea of what the course requirements are.

Hi Genevea,
I too have seen students that have been shown examples to fit both ends of the spectrum as you have indicated, but the biggest thing is that fear and tension are eased.

In a visual program such as Graphic Design it is extremely important to show examples. You'd be surprised how many students forget that they see graphic design everyday in all the printed and web material they encounter. By showing visual examples they will become aware of the designs they see on a daily basis and will start studying them since they will be creating a lot of that material once they begin working in the field.

Hi David,
What type of examples have you shared with students and what were their reactions?
Patricia

I have found that showing students examples of how the assignments will be offers them a template. Some may choose to create their assignments almost identical to what I showed them, but other students will go above and beyond the expectations. It all just depends on the dedication of the student. Also, examples seems to ease student's anxieties about the course and the assignments.

It shows students the expected outcome of what the instructor expects their work to be. Also, Visual Representation is always a great idea to give them as an example. It helps in keeping them more engaged in the class and it breaks the monotony of having a straight oral discussion.

Hi Elizabeth,
It is a great way to get students excited and motivated. Students are more likely to get started once they have been shown an example because they know the direction they need to take.
Patricia

To give them some indication of the level of professionalism you are requiring to successfuly pass the course.

Hi Karen,
The light bulb really comes on once students are shown examples.
Patricia

It is important because the student has a visual idea of what is expected of them. Because I teach computer software/applications the student usually has a slim idea of what I am looking for and the end product shows them what should be submitted and guides them on how they can go above and beyond what is expected.

It is important so they know what they can expect during the course.

I think it’s essential to show the student’s examples of the course work because it gives them an idea of what they will be learning throughout the course and how I will ask them to apply it to their current job placements. I also think that students gain additional knowledge and possible ideas from previous projects/posters/papers that I may present to them as an example. Sometimes they need that little idea booster to get them going!

help the students to be comfortable with the teacher and with the course. the students can understand and retain the subject better.

I think that by showing the students examples of past student work gives them an idea of how the assignment/project/research paper should be done. I also like to show examples of papers where plagerism has taken place. This helps the students to understand that a research paper is not just copy and paste from Google. This seems to really helpt he students grasp a better understanding of the project.
