Hi Kate,
Students have a better understanding whenever they can actually SEE what is expected of them.

By showing examples of what to expect helps to prepare students for the upcoming course and allows them to better understand your expectations of them.
Hi Schnikka,
Visual does stay with people longer, simply because you can visualize what you saw.

Hi Christina,
I agree! I show my students examples of A, B, C, D, and F work. Students appreciate the examples, and they serve as great discussion pieces.

IT IS GOOD TO SHOW EXAMPLES OF THE COURSE BECAUSE SHOWING HANDS ON NORMALLY STAYS WITH YOU FOR A VERY LONG TIME.
By providing students with models, we lower anxiety and increase the amount of time they can actually devote to the task. It is also helpful to provide them with models of the various levels of expertise. What does an A paper look like? What does a C paper look like?
By showing the students examples of the work they will be doing you help to put their minds at ease. If they know what is coming it doesn't seem as scary and daunting.
It assists students in gaining a better understanding of the work they will be doing.
Showing examples of student work sometimes helps the current students relate more to the assignment. I teach a lot of classes that are more project and lab related, and I find that even when I spell the requirements out--the light bulb doesn't always come on until I play them a sample of what is expected.
It is important to show students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course in order to prepare their minds. This will assist with decreasing their anxiety about what will be expected in the next course. Also, when students know what to expect they may choose to study or work ahead in preparation for the upcoming course.
As has been said here in many ways, giving examples to students helps to guide their responses and set them at ease when planning their course work. The more compfortable the students are with what is expected of them, the more productive they can be. It helps them to learn and apply new skills as they encounter new material.

Showing students examples helps a student to be set up for success on many levels. First, for visual learners, it helps the student to learn about expectations. Second, it helps a student to determine what needs to be done in order to excel on an assignment and third, it helps to clear up any confusion regarding assignment expectations.
Because most students (whether they have taken a particular course or related course or not)feel a lot more secure and confident about their future success in a particular course if they see actual examples of completed assignments &/or assessments by other past students. In this knowledge, it greatly increases their awareness of what to expect and consequently reduces uncertainty.
Hi Charles,
Students know exactly what is expected of them when they have SEEN an example.
Patricia Scales
Hi Enrique,
When students know exactly what is expected of them, you are right it definitely helps with retention. We have to keep our students happy.
Patricia Scales
So they have a benchmark against which to know how they will be measured.
This is a good idea. I find it very helpfull in increasing retention.
You are relieving there fears about the class and setting the expectations that they will need to meet as the class progresses.
I agree, I have recieved and had great success in showing examples of dental work to make them understand what they are reading.
