It will give all students, not just the one who are discouraged, a positive view on the future. They also have a voice from a real person who is employed and perhaps very successful. It may detract some students from dropping out!
A guest speaker would not only be good at offering a different approach to the material, they would also be able to answer questions from a different perspective regarding the vocation or subject matter.
In my program which is cdl(trucking)we have several
trucking companies send recruiters to talk to each class to tell them what their co. offers to get them to go to work for them.I also have the dmv enforcement come to explain their position with truckers.Also from time to time old students bring their trucks by for them to see and answer questions
So my students get a lot more info. this way.
Guest speakers generally have degrees--bachelors, masters, etc. They help discouraged students to see the end result of their educational goals--prestige, jobs, and the like. These guest speakers can discuss their own issues with discouragement and how they overcame it. In other words, they can provide these students with examples. In turn the students can see how they can redouble their own efforts for earning their degrees.
A guest speaker may often present a point of view that reinforces the class material and concepts. Yet, when presented by a "new" voice the message is often received differently by the student, providing a "new" relevance. This 'aha' moment may be the spark to reinvigorate and encourage the student to see the course through completion.

Students really do get excited about guest spakers. It is good for students to hear from other professionals other than the instructor all the time. Guest speakers can really add validity to the classroom.

I agree my students really enjoy when I bring in a guest speaker.
The can speak with a person who works within an industry, or who has industry experience, in which a discouraged student may have a great interest. The can get immediate feedback on the subject.

Yes! Guest speakers are priceless and students absolutely love them. Guest speakers add a lot of flavor to the course, and they really bring book theory to real life. Students love hearing how things are like in the real world. They want to know what they will face once they start their career. Students love knowing what they are learning in the classroom is applicable to the real world, and guest speakers help with this reinforcement!

By having a guest speaker it can show the potential that each student has. It also shows the end result of why the student is studying this particular field and can motivate them to see their potential.
We recently had a guest speaker in my lecture class. It was a great because it brought a new energy to the class. The speaker discussed real-world issues of health care billing, but made it interesting because he was talking to them as if they were his colleagues. This enabled them to pictures themselves as proficient workers in the filed they are studying to be in. It made their potential success palpable.
Having a guest speaker with inspiring success story is really a very good motivation for the students to aspire and achieve their goals.I use this many times,and very effective!
Having a guest speaker is very helpful, Students hear us all the time and for some of them works better if an industry professional coming to talk to them, I usually invite one of my successful graduates to come to my classes to talk to students this plan always works.
