Having a recent graduate of the program really helps our students see the value of doing the work required to pass the courses and graduate. These alumni give the students a glimpse of their own future, and can serve as a poserful motivator. In addition, the alumni can provide insight on what was required in class which can motivate the current students to rise to the occasion and do the work that is required of the course to be successful.
I plan on using this technique myself now that I have graduated my first class - I now have names of relationships with the graduates that I can draw from when selecting a guest speaker.
I think guest speakers are the most effective motivator, especially if they were a past student of mine. Them being successful provides tangible evidence that the course and the lessons taught assisted them in reaching a career goal. It makes it "real" for the student.
Guest speakers are real life examples of someone just like the student struggling. It is hard evidence that it is possible to get through this program

I feel having a guest speaker can remind a discouraged student why they signed up for the course in the first place. It may help to hear from someone new about the industry they are preparing for, and reignite the student's passion/ interest for the profession. It can often be interesting to hear from other people's experiences.
A real life success story visiting the class can really motivate a person that can't seem to see any benefit from the course, or from school as a whole. A good motivational speaker is worth their weight in gold.
Every quarter I use a guest speaker from the local health department to come in to my class and discuss OSHA and bloodborne pathogens. The students love it!!!
it lets them see where their education can lead them and why they began it to begin with. this is a tool that can mean the difference between a drop out and a graduate. I am in full support of guest speakers to help students keep themselves focused on their goal.

As a student who worked and went to school for both my undergraduate and graduate studies, I can easily see how this approach will provide positive introspection for students who may be considering dropping a class or course study.
Students usally think that their situation is unique and that NOBODY has ever gone through what they are going through. By having a guest speaker, they realize that someone has been there before and maybe that person has the answer they are looking for.
