If you utilize a former student who has been successful this could be beneficial to all students. If you utilize someone in the community it could prompt them to have a change of heart in the field they have chosen
I am new to instructing. I just completed my first week on my own. I did get to spend a couple of weeks observing an experienced instructor. Our course is only four weeks long and covers a lot of material. Most of the material is essential for the student to pass the boards they need to take to work in their new field. This is likely overwhelming and daunting for many students. Each session we have a guest speaker from an Employment Agency that is wanting our students to come apply to work for them when they graduate and pass their boards. The speaker usually comes about half way through the session. I think this works great for those students starting to question if they can complete the course. The speaker motivates and reminds them of why they are there. That if they just keep going they have a new career waiting just around the corner for them.

A guest speaker brings to the students the credibility of someone who has made it to where they hope to get to and can really help the students to crystalize their dreams and goals. Sometimes the guest speaker will tell the students exactly what the instructor has been telling them for weeks/months. Don't be offended if the students act like it is the very first time they are hearing the information. I like to invest some time after the speaker departs in debriefing about the nuggets of knowledge, ideas, attitudes, etc. gained from the guest speaker and I also have included the information on quizes and tests. Lastly, back to the student who is thinking about quitting -- if they connected with the speaker, it might be an opportunity to privately have a conversation about what the student liked about the presentation and why they would want to follow in the speaker's footsteps and then close with a version of "Do you think they would have gotten to their career if they quit when it got difficult..?"

I like to find guest speakers that use the skills from the class in an interesting way. I teach English, so I sometimes have a comedian come to class. He writes and he talks about how difficult it is to become a comedian. This shows not only the importance of writing but perseverance in a job. It's also always a fun class and gives the class a chance to bond through laughter.

A guest speaker would give the student a view through the eyes of someone who has been in the position they are. It will encourage them that even when it seems impossible it can be done. It may take some time but they will get through the program with some will and perseverance.

Guest Speakers can motivate and encourage students by giving them stories how they overcame obstacles and roadblocks on their way to career sucess. The Students can relate to them as someone who solved problems such as, home, rearing children, handling work and going to school at the same time and a host of other difficulities.
I used a guest speaker last term to introduce a unique topic and the students LOVED it! A fresh perspective gives everyone a boost.
