Guest speakers are a great at talking to discouraged students because they will be able to give students an inside look at the profession in which they are obtaining skills provided by the training they are recieveing.
using guest speakers is a great resource, especially it being part of the education the students are learning to be successful.when the guest speaker shares the message of the expectations in the real career world and working enviroment, they can actually have more information that will lock in the learning skills so the students can be successful in the learning process, and in the career enviroment.i use guest speakers in my class and the students that are lost or undecided,or having thoughts they will fail.the guest speakers will give a positive foundation and encouragment to conquer there expectations.

guest speakers are a great way to motivate students, it seems to spark students interest even more when students can ask guestions and inter act with someone that have reached their goal in their chosen field.
Hi Maricar,
It is good to let the guest speaker know those things you want them to speak about.

Hi John,
I too have had this same experience! A guest speaker can add renewed excitement for some students.

Hi James,
We need to change things up for our students. Students love hearing from other professionals, and the information serves as reinforcement as to what they have been taught.

Guest speakers help not only the discouraged students but all students because it serve as inspiration to them and motivates them to finish their studies. It is important to pick a speaker that will share their experiences from being a student, graduating and finding a job. Guest speakers should also discussed not only their success but also the hardship they encounter to reach the status they have right now.
Having had guest speakers in the classroom, I have seen the value that this experience has had for the student. With the exception of a very few, the students display a renewed enthusiasm knowing that what they are studying can get them where they want to go career wise. Their coursework takes on a new relevancy and their dedication to completing the course heightens. Those who were on the cusp of quitting seem to, for the most part, refocus. At this refocusing point, it is up to me to try to continue this newborn attidude in the student.
Sometimes, just to hear someone with a different voice is a motivation in so many ways.
Thank you Patricia for your words of encouragement. I agree, to this day I remember my Instructor and how hard he was on me and how his strict classroom belief's helped to mold me into the person that I am today.
Thank you,
Nicol
It can show them a living example of someone who "almost wasn't" even someone in a position of leadership now, may have not been a stellar student at first. It shows everyone that people are dynamic, and can rise to the occasion, even when challenges are present. We all have challenges from time to time!
Hi Nicol,
Keep enforcing rules and hold your students accountable. They will remember the impact that you make on their life and the cool teacher is not going to be very popular among their memory when they begin to become successful.

I recently switched schools, I am still in the same field, just different locations. When I came in I was the new teacher that took the place of the old (cool)teacher that let them get away with anything. I have rules for my classroom along with the rules of the school that are there for a reason. My first week was awful. I brought in one of my old graduates who recently received his license. He told the students of what he had to go through to get his diploma and that if it wouldn't have been for me there is no way he would be where he is today. In the weeks following students started talking & my student attendance has gone up to nearly 95%. It was the best decision I could have made.

Hi John,
You are right! Guest speakers have a wealth of information to share with students. They bring book theory into real life.
Patricia Scales
Guest speakers can give a different perspective on the application and relevance of course objectives. They can also reinforce what the instructor taught, and then can present insight on areas of the profession the student may have not been aware of.
Hi Deanna,
I have found that graduate guest speakers are the best. They have sat where the students are sitting, and they are so inspiring for current students.
Patricia Scales
Guest speakers can either be a former student that can give that added encouragement and enthusiasm needed for a student ready to quit or be someone else in the field. Someone else in the field can demonstrate what he or she does that can spark a new area of interest for the student.
We bring in guest speakers to add positive input to the students goals and "warning information" in hopes of avoiding the pitfalls of inexperience in the dental field. Business management, practice management, staff management, and patient management. We wait until the end of the program is with in sight so there is incentive to pay attention and learn of practical preparation for the real world experience.
Hi Robbi,
Guest speakers add a lot of flavor to the course. They put things in perspective as they appear in the real world. Students love hearing scenarios that took place in the workplace.
Patricia Scales
These guest speakers provide students with insight from someone out in the field. While they might not doubt your credibility, it keeps things fresh for them to hear from someone new. It also allows students to verify what you've been teaching when the guest speaker discusses topics already breached in class.
