Hi Michael,
I do not grade papers while my students are testing so that I can keep a very close watch on them.
Patricia
What are the adverse effects of poor student monitoring skills? Do you think that you are effectively monitoring your class, why or why not?
The effects of poor monitoring skills range from students not grasping the material to class control slipping out of hand. Both result in a lower material retention number than desired.
i walk round the class and change state as to keep the students alert as to where i am.i also watch the class while i am grading test.this way they are less likely to cheat on test
Hi Peter,
It sounds like you do a good job monitoring your classes. You have made some good points. Continue to work hard at being an effective classroom monitor.
Patricia
Hi Ricky,
My insitution has a cell phone policy. If your cell goes off, you are suspended for one day. Does your institution have a cell phone policy?
Patricia
I always keep my eyes and ears open during class and during testing. I try to point out that you will get caught playing with their cell phones, or whatever they are doing wrong. That keeps them on their toes and keeps their mind on the subject at hand.
Hi Andrew,
There is always room for improvement. Continue to work hard and use the tactics presented in this course, and you will develop into a very effective educator.
Patricia
Poor monitoring skills allow people to just be present, not to be engaged.Often, when I encounter this I will direct a question to them specifically, which might recap what we just covered.Once the students know this might come their way, they are usually more attentive. Also,if I see a trend-a couple of students starting to drift,I'll try and change gears a little-take a little break, change to a different activity.I believe I monitor my class effectively, but their are definitely some pointers here I can use to fine tune myself some more.
undeveloped skills alow not just cheaters to pass a class but also allows the learning challenged to slip by with out understanding or being noticed.
I would like to think I do a good job, however I am sure that I could do better and haveing more interaction on the students part would help then you would be able to see who is not understanding or cheating from the students around them
Hello C.C.
Teaching from every aspect is challenging, simply give it your all and all in every area, such as classroom management, teaching methods, preparedness, etc., and you will come out on top every time.
Patricia
Hi Steve,
There is always room for improvement. As educators, we must strive every day to be the best we can be.

Hello Nathaniel,
Monitoring your class is vitally important. Students know immediately that I fully monitor my classes. Monitoring your classes will decrease a lot of the nonsense.
Patricia
Hi James,
A class that is not controlled can cause inadequate learning. It is critically important for the instructor to monitor the class.
Patricia
If you do not keep track of your class the students feel that you do not care and they are in control. Sometimes it hard to watch you class because there is one of you and 30 of them. Giving a student the help they need while the other 29 students are trying to sleep play with cell phones etc.
Poor monitoring skills can be seen with sleeping not engaged students. I think every instructor should work on there skills in this area.
Some of the effects from poor monitoring might be not having any class control, students not feeling that you are paying attention to them, constant class disruption, cheating, and many other situations that can grow out of control extremely fast. I feel that walking around and keeping everyone involved is extremely important in not only class control, but helping my students feel that they are involved and I expect them to participate.
Loss of class control; inadequate learning in the class. Yes. I try to treat each student individually as a student and on a personal level.
Some students will get left behind to fail, others will exploit the system, and all will loose respect for you.
I think I do a good job. I move around a lot, address issues quickly, and reward proper behavior regularly. I will actively engage students in discussions and work with groups of no more than four so they know I have an interest in them.
Adverse effect would the student failing.
YES I BELIEVE I MONITOR MY CLASS VERY WELL, BY KEEPING MY GROUP SIZE TO FOUR PEOPLE MAKES IT VERY EASY TO INTERACT WITH EACH GROUP. IN CLASS DURING LECTURE AND TESTING I WALK AROUND THE ROOM IN BETWEEN THE TABLES JUST TO LET MY PRESENCE BE KNOWN, BESIDES IT HELPS KEEP SLEEPERS AWAKE :)
