Doing the classroom walk keeps the students on their toes as well as the instructor. When you know your subject and hand that experience to the students in the form of training aids and discussion of how it work and why, monitoring the group is much easier. They sit over your shoulder in anticipation of what comes next.

I agree Steve. keeping the movement around the room lets the students know you are on top of your game. Sitting or hiding behind a desk or podium does not work effectively wit students. taking apart training aids adds to their attentiveness and interest, they can see how it works.

Hi Daniel,
Nicely said. It is hard to know what is going on, if class monitoring is not being done. Class monitoring is a must.
Patricia

Hello Dean,
One of our sole purposes and a very important purpose is to monitor the class so that we know exactly what is going on. Exactly Dean, how could an instructor NOT monitor their class?
Patricia

poor student monitoring can have many fronts, in a class environment it could lead to side talking and conversations that could interupt the learning of other students, in a lab environment it could lead to safety related concers or unwanted damage to training aids. I feel I am effective in monitoring my students by keeping students engaged with visual training aids during lecture time and consistantly moving around throuout the classroom, and during lab staying present for the groups and preparing them with the materials needed for the task's and being avaiable for questions and concerns. as well as knowing your lab and training aids and where potential problems may arise.

I think the effects of poor class monitoring is the class thinks they can get away with anything.
Sometimes this leads to classes that run into problems when they have an instructor that does monitor his/her class closley. Myself I watch and move around the room during lecture . During tests I mbve from front to back of the class then return to the back of the class to prevent cheating.

By not monitoring your class you can not know what is going in your class and some of the problems that may be going on.Yes i feel i monitor my class by walking around the classroom and lab and asking questions and makeing mental notes as to what is going on.

Hello David,
Poor monitoring can destroy a class. Students really become frustrated whenever an instructor does not take control of the classroom.
Patricia

Wow how could NOT monitor your class! If this is not done I would wonder why are you there to begin with! If not done the class is gong downhill without doubt. With no checks kept in hand. What comes to mind would be like letting what ever happens happens. The students must know what is expected of them.

Poor monitoring skills may lead to a student(s) not maximizing his learning to dropping out. I believe I do a good job of monitoring my classes. Having a small class size is an obvious advantage. I try to get a feel for each student’s personality to notice any changes that can reflect a potential problem. Greeting each student daily with even just a couple of questions may reveal some negative change in the student. I have been able to head off major consequences by advising students at the onset of a problem.

Hi Kenneth,
There are many adverse effects of not monitoring your class. Due to the many adverse effects, it is essentional to be on top of class monitoring.
Patricia

Hello Jason,
It is a must to monitor your class so that you know exactly what is going on. Keep doing what you are doing, you are on point.
Patricia

The adverse effects of not monitoring your class are many. I believe this allows students to fall through the cracks during the educational process. It also opens the door for unacceptable behavior, like cheating. If an instructor has limited or no class monitoring ability, this could cause cues that the students give to be unnoticed. This will in most cases will limit the effectiveness as an instructor causing a diminished experience for the student.

If you do not monitor your class, you run the risk of losing control of your class. If students think that they can get away with things, they will, you will lose their respect, you will lose authority with them. If you lose the pulse of your class, then you cannot know how well they are performing, and whether or not they are effectively learning.

I think that I do well monitoring my classes. I try to identify the different types of student personalities in each class, then I try to communicate with them, in the way that best fits their personality type. In this way I can maintain watch over my class so that I can make adjustments if needed.

Hi John,
You are point. Your reputation precedes you either good or bad. The word does get around at school.
Patricia

Hi Thomas,
The instructor should always be the authoratative figure in the room, otherwise the students will take over. Monitor so that control is maintained.
Patricia

Hi Michael,
It sounds like you have a super grip on class monitoring. Keep up the good work! I take from your reading as well that you make a strong presence on Day 1 to whip your students into shape.
Patricia

Hi Bernard,
It sounds like you are all over the room, which is a good thing. By being all over the room you know what is going on. Continue to be an effective monitor.
Patricia

Adverse affects of poor student monitoring skills would be: the loss of respect of students, not gotten their monies worth, ability to learn the topic and most of all a JOB in that industry. Most of the time I will do what is stated in module, but most class will be different and will have to adjust to that class. If the instructor is consistent, word will get around to other students at that school and this would mean less issues that the instructor will have to deal with.

This is a class with no control which makes for a poor learning environment,as leader of the class you must show you are en-charge but also you are willing to learn from different situation that may take place under your control.I feel I do accomplish this but their are times that you don't know until later in the course. At this time you might have a better answer if you were monitoring effectively.
