There have been numerous responses that have been made concerning the adverse effects of poor student monitoring from loss of class control, loss of instructor respect, students disrupting the class which then affects the ability of the other students to learn. All are good responses but the bottom line is poor monitoring skills affects the whole class and the course suffers.

The students that attend my course did not have a choice whether to attend or not. This course is a requirement to complete in order to graduate. Since they have a low opinion of the valves covered in this course, for their career, some students on the first day of the class try to disrupt what is being presented.

To try to prevent this from happening I am constantly walking around the room, stopping behind or near the disrupting students and try to get them involved in the topic. They are going to be part of a workforce team when they start their careers and every team has to learn that at times they are going to agree that they are going to disagree on things.

I encourage my students to be active participants in there training. This requires them to ask questions. With proper monitoring I believe that allowing a small amount of conversation keeps the class more lively.

My students are graded on their individual assignments but I encourage them to collaborate on the assignments. By getting another students perspective they may come up with a different solution to the problem that they would have never thought of.

I keep my students advised of what their current grade is in the class by proving weekly and sometimes daily progress reports. This seems to stimulate the procrastinators to get busy.

Usually after the second week with my students most of my initial trouble makers come up to me and say that “This class is not as bad as everyone is saying” or “I’m learning a lot more from this course then I thought I would.”

I do effectively monitor my class; I do not like to stay in one spot, so I naturally travel around the class room. I am able to observe form different vantage points, and see what is going on during lecture. I can ask questions and control the class conversations to include all the students.
The adverse effects of not monitoring, is some student will feel that they are not a member of the class, so their effort is diminished, and their interest in the class and even the school may become less important to them. Keeping the student involved will express what is the value of the course towards there ultimate goal, if it is important to the instructor it will be important to the student

Hi James,
Poor classroom monitoring can cause all kind of problems. To be an effective teacher, one must manage the classroom. So much can be gathered from classroom management.

Hi J.,
The instructor should always be the authoratative figure in the room, otherwise the students will take over. Monitor so that control is maintained.
Patricia

Hi Thomas,
At least you have realized your monitoring skills as a weakness and making that realization is a big step for you. Continue to work on improving your monitoring skills. Practice allows you to become better with anything.

adverse effects of poor monitoring, well let us start with lose of class control, lost student respect, the class stops learning one student at a time.If this continues students might drop the class. At this point, you have no pattern on any student, where did it go wrong. I learn new techniques from instructors I work with, from information I read, I learn from almost every class I have, the differrent people in these classes,I am effective because I stay engaged and I pay attention to each student when they want to be heard.I learn more every day, and everyday brings more challenges.

learning stops if monitoring is not a continous effort. The class will overtake the authority of the instructor.

Students that are not monitored feel they can do whatever they want, without consequinces, and that can be very conterproductive to the class and to that students education. I feel I have made progress in this area, with a lot more to learn. I tend to be a laid back type of personality, and that shows up in my monitoring skills. It is an area I have been spending more time on to improve.

Hi James,
As an educator, you should be caring enough to want to monitor your students' learning. I can tell you about the progress of every one of my students' learning. You must know what your students can and can not do, and you should always encourage your students to try even harder.

if you don't monitor your class, you have no idea (except through testing) what knowledge they are grasping and if they will be able to retain it. skills are gained by repetition and if you are not watching and coaching the students you won't know at what level they will be able to perform at. They will feel like you don't care and if their is no reinforcement of the subject matter, they will think you don't give the subject much thought.
i think i monitor my class well and enjoy working with the students in small groups. i try to move around the class and lab so i can see what everyone is doing. i also give scenarios or ask pointed questions so i can gage where the students knowledge and skill level are at. then i can adjust so everyone can stay on course.

Hi William,
You're right! You're at a complete loss, if you do not monitor your students. You will not know what's going on with your students, if monitoring is not involved. Monitoring your class should be a natural habit as an instructor.
Patricia

Hi Leonardo,
Having the ability to converse with your students is a great characteristic of a good instructor. It is amazing what can be learned from a conversation. Students know about each other, and it is good when you have built a rapport to find out what's going on with your students.

If youo do not monitor the students well you are not getting those that struggle and need the extra help. This also helps them see that you care for them and want them to succeed

Losing good students is an adverse effect to poor student monitoring skills. A student who is usually on the ball doing the right things can be going through a tuff time in my class. If I could identify this at an early enough state, I might be able to save the student from failing. Sometimes our students need a little pep talk in order to get them refocused and motivated so that they might succeed in a course.
I feel that I do a decent job of monitoring my students but I am by no means perfect. I know that I will be incorporating some of the monitoring skills I learned in this module in my future classes. I start of by greeting my students in the morning before they enter my classroom. I am constantly engaging them in conversation to get a feel of what is going on inside their heads.

Hello Richard,
I can tell you are a very caring instructor, and you get to know your students. It is smart as to how you small talk with your students to determine their mental state. Continue to build great rapports with your students.
Patricia

Hi Robert,
It sure is necssary to monitor your class. I've eperienced by monitoring my classes, my students perform at a higher level.
Patricia

Hi Bill,
Monitoring tells a lot. It is amazing what you learn by mointoring your classroom. You definitely can quickly pick up on whether or not the student understands the concept.
Patricia

Hello Svetlana,
The vast majority of your students do not want chaos. The vast majority of your students want structure and control. You are on point, students want an evironment that is conducive for learning.
Patricia

Poor monitoring skills cheats the students out of a first class education. If we are preparing them to go out into the real world, it is likely some of the students will not be near as successful. Good monitoring makes for better students and ultimately better workers in their field. As noted in some of my other comments, I start each day with asking each student how their day is going, what did they do over the weekend, or what are their plans for the upcoming weekend. It allows me to gauge their current emotions. For example, yesterday one student told me he was feeling poorly and it showed in his eyes. I made him aware that I was concerned and to keep me advised if his condition became worse. I have found that this method greatly reduces my monitoring requrements because the class learns to be there for each other.

Monitoring a class can be a daunting task, but it is definitely necessary. if the students know you are keeping an eye on them and their progress, they begin to realize the importance of their learning.
