Hi Shoukat,
I am sure if you and when you witness cheating, you will reprimand the student. Some students are sneaky, and they do things quickly before they get caught.
Patricia

Hi Stephen,
Cell phones can be our biggest enemy in the classroom. Students use the cell phone in a variety of ways to cheat...texting to get answers, utilizing the internet to get answers, having prepared notes in notepad on the cell phone. It is a very smart tactic to have cell phones put away during test time.
Patricia

If they are caught cheating they receive an automatic zero. I have at times caught students cheating using texting to cheat. One of the other students told me that is how this particular group had achieved their high degree of A's. Moving forward there was to be no more phones or texting allowed in the classroom. Seperating the group helps and the students you may suspect sit in the front. The stories go on and on.

Walk the room during the exam and or sit at the front of class and be aware

1-Clear and Precise explanation of the school's Policy regarding Cheating and its Consequences.

2-Clear and Precise explanation of the content of the course in Syllabus, and Instructor's expectations from the students when they are taking Tests, etc...

3-I always have sitted my students Every Other chairs to prevent them from cheating. However, on one occasion, I saw that the student turned her back toward me as she was getting up to walk toward me to hand me her completed Test, and I saw her talking to peer next to her! She did it too Fast!

Hi Shana,
Different versions of the tests is certainly a great way to minimize cheating. Different versions of the test can be done easily with today's technology.
Patricia

Creating mulitple version of the examination is a stratgery I use to reduce the opportunity of cheating.

Hi Alexadner,
Cheating should never happen, but it does. What do you do to reduce cheating?
Patricia

Hi Howard,
Turning off and putting the cell phones away is certainly a smart way to reduce cheating. It is amazing how students utilize cell phones to cheat. They will text each other for numbers. They have cheat notes typed in notepad on the cell phones. They utilize the internet to help find answers. They come up with various ways to utilize the cell phones to cheat.
Patricia

In order to reduce the opportunity for cheating in my class, I tell my students to turn off their cell phones. I ask them to observe the honor code. I stand in the back of the classroom to monitor the test or exam.

For tests an instructor can separate students if the class is big enough and has enough extra tables and chairs. Also, asking the students to clear off their desks of all books and binders and only having their test and pen/pencil on the table.

Cheating is not tolerated. There are so many grey areas when it comes to this, although as long as the expectations are set from the begining and there is an active learning environment, cheating should never happen.

Hi Kori,
Smart way to reduce cheating. You really go above and beyond by creating 4 different tests.
Patricia

That is an excellent move!

I make 2 to 4 versions of the test/quiz.

When giving a test, I remindthe students to think before they take someone elses answers. I ask them what make them think that their neighbor is smarter than they are, it seems to help a little. I also try to be very attentive and met the eyes of anyone that seems to have wandering eyes.

In English class, cheating usually takes the form of plagiarism.

I am sure to discuss what plagiarism is on the first day of class and why it is an irresponsible behavior. As a class, we discuss what constitutes plagiarism so that students have a good understanding of this.

Then I let them know that I read everything they turn in. And I do just that. It is valuable to do so because I become familiar with each student's writing voice and style. The bonus is that it not only allows me to recognize when they've just copied and pasted, but it gives me the opportunity to get to know them better. I find they appreciate this.

I also make sure they understand the guidelines for assignments and clarify with students that seem to be a bit unclear. I also let them know that it is okay to turn in work that, while it may be their best at the time, still needs to be developed. This is what education is about. If I can't see where they need to hone their skills, then I can't help them develop them. In turn, once I've graded and returned a paper with comments and editing marks, they are allowed to revise it and turn it in for a better grade. As a writer, I feel this is the best way to develop the writing skills of my student.

I've had students tell me that because I read all their work, write comments on it, and double and triple check their understanding--that they know I care. This seems to be pretty effective in the classroom.

By having different test within the student.

Hi Mark,
That's right! Some students will do what they can to beat the system by cheating, and they must realize they are only hurting themselves.
Patricia

I give at lease a B & C version just in case what I call (students with wondering eyes won't be able to cheat. There's another thing it took me learn, students must take everything off their desk, books, purses, put all cell phones away, and as for finals i've made them stand up wave their hand in the air like they just don't care. You'll be suprise were some answer are.
