I don't think it is fair at that point, but if you SEE them COPYING from the student's paper it is CHEATING.

Practice with the student, build their self esteem.
I always change my tests, sometimes by re-scrabling the questions, other times by changing the questions all together, this prevents exiting students from giving out the answers to incoming students. Also, since I teach Insurance Billing and Coding most of their answers are filling in codes, so it makes it harder for them to look over each other's shoulders
By walking around the class and possibly having different exams we can reduce student cheating. m/s

Talk to your DOE about implementing other styles of tests other than Multiple Choice testing. Put the prosposal in writing and have strong justification as to why you want to make this change.

It just appears that you can get a better overall view by standing in the back to watch students. Students need to know that they are being watched, this in itself minimizes cheating.

I agree that changing test format, maybe more short answers, reduces cheating. I also found out that standing in the back instead of walking around helps.

Our school uses A and B tests. I also sit in the back of the room and observe students while they are taking the test. Would like to see our school move away from Multiple choice testing.
Depending on the size of the class, I will print 2 to 3 versions of the same test. It does no good to try to cheat as the student beside you probaly has another version.

I like essay questions too. It is real hard to cheat on an essay test, but students will try anything.

I like essay questions. This way you know if they are cheating and also what their thought process is on the subject.
Movement and standing in the back works well, but I had a bad habit of grading as papers came in thats when i learned that practice was a mistake. I had a student remove a answer sheet from my bag, and thats when rubber necking took place. Needless to say I do not grade in class anymore. jack o"connor
Wlak around the classroom during tests or assignments. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away.
I like to have 2 different tests that have the same questions, but the questions are in a different order. This is a big detour for cheating. Sometimes, if I do not have 2 different tests, I will still treat the tests like I have 2 different exams. I will write a 1 or a 2 on the top of the test, and have the student write the corresponding number on their answer key. This has worked very well for me in the past.
