As an instructor, we should be the role model and show the students how to act and dress professionally. We should be organized, well informed, and consistent. We should show students how to remain calm and how to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
Making sure that I am a role model for the students, and treating them as adults. Making sure that I am always dressed in appropriate attire for work.
Getting the students involved in the class, and letting them ask questions. Being honest about the grading system and what is expected of them.
Having a positive attitude about the school, other instructors and the material being taught.
Hi Chonitia,
Awesome response! It is good to know that there are other educational institutions that regard professional image highly. We as educators must be the professionals that we want our students to become.
Patricia
Appropriate dress, appropriate body language, addressing students as people as well as students, keeping the task at hand about the class not what happens outside of it. My concern is how to regain an image that may be lost due to poor student behavior or defamation of character that has been brought about by students trying to play the system.
Hi Linda,
I concur! We must certainly be the professional that we want our students to become.
Patricia
Hi Liza,
You made me smile! I am sure your positive attitude and outlook are very contagious! I agree with you 100%! Keep being enthusiastic!
Patricia
First thing is to be in the classroom before my students come in. Then greet them with a smile, never with a frown or frustration. They do not need to know the negatives that may have happened in the day. Also, showing a postive self esteem, being excited to teach what I know and what to share with them, allow them to begin class with their "hellos" as well. Being well groomed and smelling nice, there is nothing more negative about BO or a bad appearance. Smile, smile, smile!!
I strongly believe that you must practice what you teach. If you present yourself as the professional you are expecting your students to grow into you will earn their respect and they will view you as a positive role model.
I totally agree with the instructor setting the stage and the more positive the image, the greater the influence. We at my school are extreme regarding dress code and maintaining a professional image that will be expected in the field the student will be part of. This image not only reflects our visual look but also relflects our behavior. The student is always looking to take the lead from us. "We must lead and not try to follow"
Hi Ryan,
Preparation is key and to get off on the right start is vital as well. You have to let your students know by your presence and actions that you are serious about their education.
Patricia
I found that if I dress professionally and make sure I am very well prepared for the first week of school; my students know that I mean business but that I also care that we have a smooth school year.
1. Set guidelines up front, so that students understand what is expected.
2. Learn students names.
3. Don't get personal. Leave personal problems at the door.
4. Use real life experiences to help show how material is applicable to their learning needs.
5. Admit mistakes and correct them.
Your dress and appearance should never be in question as well as your attitude towards the training, school and other facailty.
I try my best to keep my students very well informed on whats coming up in the school. My students really appreciate it. Also, I always try to start AND finish every day with a smile on my face.
Hi Mike,
An instructor's reputation says it all, either good or bad. Students will pass judgement on you. Hopefully, your reputation is good, and students simply want to flock to your class because you are knowledgeable, professional, prepared, organized, caring and fair.
Patricia
Once you have been teaching awhile your reputation is cemented and will proceed you. If you know your subject and bring it to your students in an insightful way, you will succeed.
Dress professional, adhere to the ethical code of conduct, and set a example to students of what the industry would want to hire
Hi Deborah,
Absolutely! Students look to us to get the ball rolling.
Patricia
I think that it is important to dress professionally even when you are going to your campus on your day off. Students do not know that it is your day off. They will be seeing you inappropriately dressed rather than dressed as instructors should be dressed. If they see you dressed professionaly all the time, then they will respect you more. We need to dress for success. Many students, today, do not know how to dress properly even for a job interview.
Re: April
I agree that we should tell the students that we are not their friends. We should state that we are the teacher and they are the students. This way they know their roles very clearly.
