Hi John,
There is nothing like a sharp dressed instructor. Students love it when we look the part. I too am a sharp dresser, and students tell me all the time, I want to look like you when I enter the work force. We must lead by example.
Patricia

Hi Toshia,
Absolutey! NO HANGINg OUT WITH STUDENTS. Keep it strictly professional. I was 23 when I started in this industry, and I have never hung out with students...way too risky.
Patricia

Hi Curtis,
I concur! Nothing can be noted in a negative way whenever there is a professional distance between the instructor and the student.
Patricia

Hi Joele,
The studens also expect us to be professional and will make it known when we are not.
Patricia

Hi Nicolle,
Each student is really eaqual, and as professionals we should make each student feel as though they are the same. Students frown upon favoritism.
Patricia

Because it shows that there is no favoritism in your class and that each student is equal. It also provides a professional knowledge that you have in your chosen field and creates respect from the students.

We always need to be professionsal. The students respond to that and it's part of our job.

It is important for the instructor to maintain that professional distance from his students to allow the learning process to develop without the distractions of friendship. This professional distance also protects the instructor from accusations of favoritism or expectations of special treatment based on the relationship.

I agree with that. I've had to explain to my students that it's nothing personal if I see you at a social event and don't "hang out" with you. I told them that even though I am the same age or younger than some of my student's it is still a professional relationship that had to be maintained.

Hi Alicia,
Students emulate us as professionals, therefore we need to look and act the part.
Patricia

Hi Alex,
Keep it fair and simple, give students what they earn.
Patricia

Hi Katie,
You are right! Our responsibilities at all levels should be taken extremely serious.
Patricia

Hi Karen,
Boundaries must be established in a student/teacher relationship. When students learn that they are no boundaries, one thing leads to another...not good.
Patricia

In order for the instructor to be effective they should maintain professional distance from the students.

Maintaining a professional distance from students is an important part of class management because of our position of authority. It is a responsibility not to be taken lightly.

because you dont want them to gety to comfortavle with you and expect a better grade

Maintaingin a profeesional image is important because it sets the professional manner that will help them in school and in their career.

Me Too!!!

Good for him/her. Think of the life experiences he/she had to share.

I have actually experienced this problem in a previous class I taught. I was friends with a lady who ended up taking one of my classes. In the end, she expected that because of our friendship she would do better in the class than she did. She thought I would be more lenient with here and give her a grade for her efforts. She came into my class knowing she was going to get an A, but only presented C quality work. It ended up destroying a wonderful relationship because she wanted special treatment that I was not willing to provide her.

All students must be treated equally in grading and you cannot forge a special relationship with a student and expect it to not affect your classroom or your friendship. It is best to always remain professional with your students both in and out the classroom.

I had a colleague who allowed his students to many freedoms out of the classroom. In class he demanded their respect and he returned respect. However, out of the classroom he tried to be everyone’s friend. He was a little too free with the students which resulted in many of them thinking they would get a better grade in his class. In the end, when nearly the whole class got very low grades, he ended up having a class discussion about why and what could they do to change it for their next instructor. It was unanomous, every one of the students thought that because they have formed a friendship with him out of the classroom, he would give them an automatic A in my class.

I always tell my students, there is not an E on the grade scale, which means, I do not grade for effort. I grade for comprehension and completion.

I dress sharp and keep my faced shaved and shirts clean. Even though our trade is electrical and it isn't as important to look sharp it is important to dress properly for the job at hand.
