This is so much more challenging with social media. I have a strict "no facebook" policy and wonder how other teachers can even blur that line.

I struggle with having them call me Ryan or "Mr. Unger."

But I certainly agree dress and presentation are critical. I wear shirts/ties whenever possible and always wear button ups and khakis.

If you dress and behave professionally, students will take you more seriously.

I ask that my students call me by title (Mrs. Kirby) rather than by first name, b/c it keeps the line between instructor and student more clear.

I think it helps a lot when working with younger students.

There is more than one reason this is important. Someone needs to be in charge, and if you do not project a proper image, someone may interpret that as a sign that you are not the person in charge. If you do not maintain a professional image, students may question your expertise in that field, because you do not have expertise as an properly qualified instructor. Finally, your motive for being an instructor may be questioned, and not just by your students.

Commanding respect is accomplishing by maintaining a professional image. If my students don't respect me they won't pay attention, complete assignments, etc. If I am their "friend" they will not see me as a leader and mentor in class.

Hi Charlotte,
I agree! Anyone should walk into your institution and know immediately who the instructors are based on appearance and presentation.

Hi Barbara,
I concur! We are under a close MICROSCOPE by students!
Patricia

Hi Deborah,
Yes, lead by example. Be the model you want your students to become.
Patricia

Hi Jana,
I concur. I was very young when I started teaching 22 years ago fresh out of college, but I always demonstrated myself professionally in all areas. Students knew that I was in control.

Hi Lynne,
Favoritism is frowned upon at every level in education. Be a true professional and be fair and treat everyone the same.
Patricia

Hi Khristina,
Distance says a lot in education. You are right! By displaying distance the students knows the authoritative figure, the instructor.
Patricia

Hi Denise,
You are right! Really we are some of the only role models our students have.
Patricia

Hi Lori,
Our students really do look up to us as role models. To show your personality is good, but remember to maintain professionalism while doing it.
Patricia

Hi Sekou,
Absolutely! Looking the part is expected and needed to help demonstrate professionalism and being a leader.
Patricia

Absolutely it is important to emulate the professional behaviors that we want our students to develop.

Hi Nicole,
You are right! We are constantly being watched. Our students are waiting on us to mess up. Don't give your students a reason to lose trust and credibility in you.
Patricia

Hi Richard,
Teaching should be looked at as strictly business. Everything needs to take place within the building.
Patricia

Hi Mark,
Yes, it shows how to lead by example.
Patricia

It develops the settting in that the instructor is emparting his or her wisdom upon the student, such as elder to novice.

If instructors get to close to their students, by this I mean, socializing with them outside of the classroom, then they will try and manipulate the situtation if there is problem in class. The instructor will lose their trust with the students.

It is important in being able to remain objective, and to set yourself as a role model for your students.
