Hi Thomas,
I agree! Favoritism is definitely frowned upon. Treat everyone the same.

If too at ease with Students, Students may view the Instructor as a "buddy" verses the Leader of the Classroom. Having a professional relationship with students is important, but knowing what and when to discuss unrelated issues should be always be considered.

Because friendships can lead to false expectations of behavior and judgement.

You need to develop respect while maintaining your position as the leader for the educational process

Friendship can also lead to the impression of special treatment for certain students which is a huge un motivator.

Hi Kennedy,
Professionalism is key! Students have a greater sense of respect for you whenever you are professional.

Patricia Scales

Hi Julie,
I concur! Students expect us to behave professionally in all areas! Students watch us closely.

It reinforces the professional standard of student instructor relationship.

An instructor must always present a professional image to his or her students. Depending what type of class the atmosphere can either be a little bit looser or tighter. Teaching American Literature the instructor may want to make the class into a seminar situation and discuss the works, but the instructor must present a positive and professional image. A business course instructor must also present himself or herself in a way the projects the business profession. As far as a maintaining a professional distance from the students, you must show that you care about each and every student but must be impartial to all. This will also protect the instructor from undue critisism and charges of partiality and/or fratinazation with students.

Maintaining a professional image is a student expectation. It allows the instructor to be viewed as the authority figure resulting in student respect.

By maintaining distance with the students you maintain the professional boundaries that are the basis of much of higher education. The need to act as a role model is central to this approach as students should aspire to gain as much knowledge and success as possible.

Hi Judy,
You are on point! I can tell you lead by example, and you serve as a role model to all.

Patricia Scales

Hi Kim,
You are absolutely correct! We have to be role models for our students because in some cases we are our students only role model.

I feel professional image is so important...
knowledge of the course being taught...dress attire...and how a class is managed.

I've always believed that any Instructor must be a leader and someone the students respect and admire. Someone that motivates them to come to class and want to further their education.
An Instructor is not only a leader, but sets an example for the students.

Hi Cynthia,
I am sure you have learned that it is a way to be professional, yet be caring and approachable. Find you a nice system and work it to you and the students advantage.

Patricia Scales

Hi Mahnaz,
Students emulate what they see. We as instructors should be professional at all times.

Hi Tyson,
I have witnessed it for over 22 years, if you give respect to students, they will in turn give you respect.

Many of my students will be entering the work field for the first time, after a long absence, or transitioning from blue collar factory work to a more stable "profession" such as medical assisting. Those students need to see an example of what they will be expected to look like once they enter the work field.

Many of them spent their earlier work years in jeans and Tshirts and they've never really had good role models for professional dress. It is my responsibility to be that role model for them.

Hi Chris,
We must lead by example. I have been in the career college for over 22 years, and I have discovered that a lot of our students do not know the difference between club wear and professional wear. We must teach by dressing professionally ourselves.

I very much like the reply re. CPR. If an instructor can keep that in mind, I think that person will be a success.

I also have not heard of this acrostic being applied this way. Great idea and may I use this in class. Also I like to arrive early ans straigten up the room. For example putting chairs back under the tables or aligning the desk. I just feel like it set the stage for learning.
