Hi Dr. Mmuo,
You do a fine job showing your students how a professional should conduct themselves. Continue to be a great role model.
Patricia

Hi Leila,
My institution has a no fraternization policy! It is simple, you will lose your job if you fraternize with students.
Patricia

So many answeres can be established with this question! One it keeps from rumors started and possibly cause an inhouse inquiry to your relationship between instructor and student. Another is not to cause favortism and other students see this and now want the same. Keeping your distance keeps control of the class instruction and students as well.

It is important as a professional to not fraternize with your students. I do feel it is ok to let them know you are human. But if you cross the lines of getting to personal it can turn into a negative situation. They may not respect you as much or trust your teaching style.

My professional image is critical o earning the respect of my students. I always make sure I am neatly and careully dressed. I get my work ready for the first class. Take my time to describe to the students what the requirements, expectations and benefits are of the class as well as the rules that must be followed and what is not acceptable before I proceed with the class content.

When i notice that the students are beginning to take things for granted or disobey some guidelines, i remind them of the requirement and address it before it escalates. I am very good at knowing my students names and boosting their confidence in Q & A sessions. However, my weakness is that I do not address those who come late or make excuses for their laziness. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and sometimes it becomes a diffult situation that I have to address in my next class or course.

Dr. Mmuo.

That is a great concept i will use that thank you.

I have seen the mistake that instructors make when trying to be "friends" with their students. It causes resentment in the classroom of those they are not "friends" with and leads to a problem class that complains constantly.

Being a professional shows your students that you take your job seriously. At the college, I am employed at professionalism is taught on a day to day basis. I want to establish quickly with mys students that a professionalism is a key to yoru success. Also, by practicing this a professional attitude students know you mean business at all times.

Hi Bobby,
That's right! You have to much at stake to become friends with your students. Remember to always protect your career and your character.
Patricia

Hi Brittney,
Great outlook! One of the biggest compliments that I can get from students is for them to tell me I want to be like you.
Patricia

I agree. I want my students to say that they would like to be like me one day. Therefore, I make sure that I am professional at all times and I treat everyone with respect so that I can get the same in return.

It is important to maintain a professional distance from students becasuse you do not want to jepordize your career and personal life.

Hi Roberto,
That's right! You must establish boundaries with your students, otherwise they will get into your space and personal relationships may begin to become established.
Patricia

Boundries must set. I am in a postion of authority. If an instructor becomes too friendly, students will expect to be an exception. Rules to be bent....favorites to be played...etc. Each person needs to be aware of their place in the classroom dynamic.

The CPR idea is right, you should keep a distance between you and your students or the class will be a chaos, a complete mess!

Hi Lisa,
Favoritism is definitely frowned upon in the classroom by students. Treat all students the same.
Patricia

Hi Herlene,
What do you you to display a professional image!
Patricia

Hi Kim,
Students need to know that we genuinely care about them and their success. Students need role models not more friends.
Patricia

Hi Alice-Marie,
We have to make students think about their own image by modeling what a professional image should look like.
Patricia

Hi Sharon,
I like your perspective about maintaining a professional image for your students. Trust me, you will be remembered and respected a lot more than that instructor that was trying to be their friend.
