Traits of Successful Instructors
In your opinion, what instructor traits and characteristics are important for good classroom management?
Having the Guide styles as well as the Controller gets respect from students and productivity remains high.
I truly believe that as an instructor you need to have some buddy qualities, if your adult student believes you care about their well being they will respect you more. That said I would never break a school rule for a student that's why I strive to be the guide.
Organized, prepared, listens to students, maintains class control and discipline.
Proactive, prepared for emergencies and able to control negative behaviors, and anger.
I think being kind, flexible, caring, organized and interesting are some important traits. I need to work on the active learning part; I do too much lecture.
The characteristics of a god instructor are being a good listener, but also knowing and understanding that they have to learn the "I" Strategies in conversating with students who are disruptive with out losing control of the classroom.
The teacher needs to be engaging and interested. The students need to be challenged and yet be understood.
An instructor has to engage the student and keep them interested on class and then check that the student understood. If one or more students did not understand, I try to identify the problem and solve it. I’m flexible with my students to help them in different ways.
I think that emotion should not get involved, even though that is difficult. Consistent positivity is good as well.
Be prepared to teach, be time conscious...be 5 minutes early to class & watch for classroom breaks, always write your objectives for the class prior to class, greet students, maintain a positive attitude and have a passion for the material being covered, teaching should be interactive (continually asking questions of your students and answering any question they may have), end the class with a 10 minute review of the class objectives, go the extra mile, be empathetic...don't ever forget that you were once a student and should always be a student, and last but not least motivate, motivate and motivate.
An instructor needs to be able to assess the needs of the students and how to engage the students that will meet their needs.
As a math teacher, I'm always finding students who have a hard time understanding the math. To address this I try to explain how the concept is to be understood rather than just focusing on the mechanics of the material. I'm always hoping that the students can wrap their minds around it and see how the math is integrated into their approach to life/reality.

An instructor needs to be aware of his classroom at all times. You need to make sure that you are constantly consistent with all policies and procedures no matter what the day brings. You may have to adapt to changes but always be consistent. Be fair and let the students know that you care about them and most importantly their education.
An instructor needs to be a good listener. Be a role model for students at all times. Provide prudent guidance when is requested.
In my opinion the instructor sets the tone for the classroom management on day one. The instructor should be accessible, understandable, and consistent with enforcement of policies and expectations. And it certainly helps to have a good sense of humor!
I've found that greeting students when they first arrive to class helps convey that you are an approachable instructor. Also say goodbye to them as you dismiss them.
This was a great lesson I really enjoyed it. I kind of laugh to myself because I have seen each style of instructors within the organization I work in. Even in myself when I first became a instructor.
An instructor requires numerous traits for effective classroom management... They need to establish a good relationship and trust with their students. They must be able to control the classroom and address disruptive behavior in a positive manner without being overbearing or compromising student comfort level. They must be great listeners and communicators. Instructors should clearly establish their expectations at the beginning of a class. They must also be fair and consistent when enforcing policies. They should be well organized, prepared, and proactive. Also, instructors should be knowledgable and confident in there subject areas and show sincere care and enthusiasm for their role and their students. These are just a few instructor traits and approaches to effective classroom management.
Instructors should be good listeners and appear approachable. The fact that one is a good listener is null if no one feels that they can approach them to talk when needed.
As the guide, the instructor should be very diplomatic, consistent, firm, fun, and fair. Students should view this individual as the authority figure, but not an overbearing one, someone the students trust and view as competent, always helpful, and having the student's,m as well as the schools, best interests at the forefront.
