Being a guide to students is very important to be a good instructor. I also believe that a good teacher should have their own love for learning and be able to inspire students with their passion of education and the course material.
A combination of characteristic traits relating to the buddy and controller are most important in classroom management. Students feel comfortable and non-threatened with this style but the controller is more well prepared aND likely to stick to course objectives, which influences learning.
The teacher needs to be engaging and interested. The students need to be challenged and yet be understood. Sometimes their personal life can be weighing on their minds and it can distract their learning.
There are so many instructor traits and characteristics for good classroom management that come to my mind. I immediately think of compassion!I think an instructor needs to love what they do! Instructors should look forward to their class everyday, and also look forward to developing a positive relationship with the students. I think compassion goes hand-in-hand with other important instructor traits such as caring, patience, and respect for the students. Effective classroom management also incorporates consistency and fairness. It is also important for the instructor to be flexible in their teaching methods while still following their lesson plan for the day. Each class as a whole has it's own "personality". The instructor must be keen on the "mood" of the class that day and adjust accordingly. I strongly believe that instructors should be each student's personal cheerleader. Instructors who show each student support makes all the difference in the world to that student! In some cases, the instructor might be the only cheerleader the student has. I think these are some of most important traits and characteristics instructors should possess and impart to our students everyday.
First, I believe as an instructor I need to be a model of the behavior I expect from the students. For example, I need to be on time to class and follow class policies. I want the students to speak in a respectful manner to me and to each other, so I work at speaking respectfully to them. I also think stopping disruptive behavior is important. It has been my experience that other students that are trying to pay attention and learn feel frustrated when an instructor ignores a disruptive student.
The Guide is the type of instructor I would like to be. I started as the controller due to my desire to achieve my perception of what success is in the classroom. I know have adopted some activities that help destress the students. I try to adapt to the class dynamic when planning study sessions. Some classes are more competitive and like games, while some are not. So, tailoring your plans are a necessary evil. You must also remember to not neglect those students who need independent study time.
Successful instructors model good behavior.
The best teacher I ever had was Ms. Radik. She taught me so many life lessons and she really seemed to care about me as a person. She always planned for success; considering the needs of her student first. She exhibited strong organizational skills, but had the soft skills and EQ to easily relate to her students needs. She was always sensitive to the students' feeling and treated them with respect; never making them feel uncomfortable or threatened. She handled disciplinary problems swiftly and without getting angry, while always preserving the students dignity.
Ms. Radik always had the respect of her class and could bring out the best in me. She showed a sincere interest in our outcomes and professional commitment to the material.
She never let us slack on self-discipline, active participation, personal responsibility, or proper interaction with others.
It is always easier to pass the time when you are being taught by someone who loves their subject matter, enjoys themselves during class, and exhibits a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
I believe a successful instructor is passionate and fully engaged with their class. Not only must an instructor earn the class respect with regards to exemplary knowledge of the subject but he/she must convey that knowledge in a multi-modal approach and deliver it to each and every student. The next step is to connect that knowledge to the practical application in the field. The students need to believe the teaching is relevant and beneficial.
Living by the Golden Rule if first and foremost in my life philosophy. Treating everyone as I would want to be treated is true in the classroom and outside the classroom. Respect is a trait that is of utmost importance. I find that if respect is given it is then returned. In my 10 years as an Instructor I have had very few management issues. As a role model I try to show organization, respect, effort, and a caring attitude. I believe that students recognize these traits and appreciate them.
I am More buddy But do have controller in beginning. Will work on this very good class so far
I believe that students can sense your interest in them and the subject. If you can impress upon them from the first day of class that gaining knowledge in the subject is important to their future success they will be more likely to pay closer attention.
Knowledge of subject, establishing class rules, and student involveement is very important.
This course was very helpful. Dealing with adults with a variety of personalities can be challenging. I feel that guides are very important to classroom management. The reason is due to more of a balance of order. Not too strict, able to keep the class motivated and on task. We are not here to be friends, although alot the students are not too far from my age group. We re here to provide them with the skills for a career.
Being the Guide .... I work with adult students that are good learners that have a lot of pride and guiding them threw my glasses challenges allows the feeling of self learning to grow.
An instructor that is consistent and models the behavior they expect from their students will have success in the classroom.
At the end of the day I think that you truly have to care about the success of the students to be a good instructor. If you do care then the rest of it all seems to fall into line as it was described in this course. If you care then you will always maintain class control as you see how it can affect the learning environment. I have heard many instructors say that this is "the easiest job they have ever had". Honestly, this is the toughest job I have ever had and I am completely exhausted after 6 hours of class. It takes a lot of energy and passion to lead 30 students to the same spot as they all seem to want to take a different path to the objective. But a passion for getting them all there will drive you to care as the buddy does but keep them on track as the controller does.
I agree completely. Knowing the material allows me to have more freedom. I can create activities on the fly to help students with a difficult concept. I'm also not chained to the book or the slides. I can show real world examples of the material.
I find that moving around the room is a very good technique. I use it to gauge my students attention. If they follow me as I move then they are paying attention. When I start losing them I change tactics.
Compassion, passion and experience in their field of teaching, this makes it easier for success
A good instructor needs to be able to incorporate several styles of instruction in the class room. Control ,buddy and a guide to students. It is also very important to use humor in the class as a teaching tool.
