Servet, what traits can you share with respect to successful instructors?
James Jackson
Tracy, respect is earned and is never given freely so you have hit upon a very critical topic. There are some within our profession that feel because they are the teacher that students MUST respect them and this is simply the wrong posture to take. Students will respect those that earn their respect so our focus as instructors is to earn their respect daily.

When dealing with adult learners I feel an important thing to do is to maintain professional behavior in the classroom. Alot of times setting a good example will encourage the students to model that behavior. Also having a strong knowledge of your subject matter and being prepared for class helps keep things running smoothly.
Excellent rapport and a polite firm disciplinary style that peserves students' dignity are the instructor traits and characterisitics that I have taken from this course for good classroom management.
Industry knowledge
Polished communication skills
Conscientious approach to conveying information
Maintaining high standards/expectations of student performance
I could not agree with you more. Respect is earned. You can threaten your students and try to get respect good luck with that approach.
Prior planning for the lesson plan if this is your first time with the plan give it a run through. Try to become a "Guide " if you are not. Be proactive in class with rules, attention spans and dicipline.
Always have a plan "B" and even a "C" just in case of unforeseen issues.
Be very motivated, start and end class on time, do not get stuck behind your desk or powerpoint and be enthusiastic! It will rub of on your students!!
I feel that an instructor needs to be respectuful of students. Also make them feel that you care about them as student and as humans. It is very important to get their respect as well. Without respect they will have a hard time seeing you as an authority figure.
The forum afford the opportunity to gain valuable inside and provide a great platform to share ideas on better teaching concept and discovering new way to be effective instructor
aggain thank you
I think that leadership is a trait that is imperative. The instructor also has to be someone who can multi task and also does not take what happens in the classroom to personally.
I feel that good classroom management comes from an instructor that is well organized and the students clearly know what to expect from each class. The instructor should also be able to have the ability to build rapport with the students and feel confident enough in themselves to hand classroom problems.
In my opinion, being observant and knowing what is going on everywhere in your classroom is the key to good classroom management. If you notice undesirable behavior and can be stopped quickly before it gets out of hand. It also helps to set firm expectations on the first day of class.
In my opinion, the traits that make an instructor successful are good work ethics and positive mental attitude. In this way an instructor can lead by example. Of course effective communication skills are extremely important also. I think that it is important to be able to use multiple methods of delivering instruction, so that we can cater our class room management styles to the students as individuals.
The adult learner has a different focus when entering a learning environment. He or she can be juggling a family, dealing with a difficult job or other strenuous situations. The instructor must acknowledge that their maybe many outside interferences that may contribute to certain un-desiable actions, and must able to calmly correct or understand the problem.
Ahmed, students tend to respect those that respect them as individuals. Problems in their lives can at times cause them to not return the respect you have given but my experience has been they are not reacting against the instructor as much as they are reacting to what life tends to dish out to them. Always be respectful and when that respect is not given back, understand out students have many challenges in their lives and it is rare they are addressing their aggression against you personally. Always be willing to look deeper and understand the root cause of their frustrations and you will tend to find outside issues beyond the classroom that are taking place. Great topic and thanks for bringing this forward.

In my opinion the traits that are important for instructors to possess are fairness and mastery of the subject that they teach. I think that fairness is extremely important to make students feel secure. The Instructor needs to understand the information he or she is trying to convey, otherwise it becomes problematic.
If you treat students the way you would like to be treated, you will go a long way with classroom discipline. It may also be necessary from time to time to remind students of the rules and policies. We also encourage instructors to remind any student anywhere on campus of school rules and policies if they are not in compliance.
For many years teaching, I have learnt that giving students respects, and deal with them as an adult is an effective tool make them listen to you. Of course well prepare of the subjects and lessons(break it down) to make sure all students will understand. I conduct every six weeks an advising report with each student covering wide range of academic,behaviors,attendance---etc to show the student's progress and our concern as the school for his or her success.
The trait or characteristic that I feel is most needed and effective is simply one of really showing that you care about what you are teaching and the student themselves, especially as it relates to their ultimate success. This is not something that can necessarily be taught or conveyed in an honest manner by all too many instructors. Students will notice a teacher who is truly caring, approachable, and responsive versus one who is only there for a paycheck. As such, I feel that when the student feels the instructor truly cares, that feeling will transfer in a positive manner to improving student learning outcomes significantly overall.
Respect fpr the learners experiences prior to entering the classroom. In an andagogical settintg the focus is learner centered and the teacher acts as a facilitator rather than the keeper of knowledge.
