I think keeping the students involved and giving special attention to their needs can be a good approach. Many times, eye contact and connecting with the students is just enough to keep their attention.

Letting students know what they are responsible for, and what is expected from them is a good way for them to stay interested and rise to the occasion for tasks.

I agree, i have also learned how to respond to different. We sometimes have a tendacy to look at our students as our own children and expect them to sometimes behave like as if we have raised them. We must be very careful with this because this can lead us to respond as parents instead of instructors.

If they have a question that they think is stupied i tell them there is no stupied question.I also find something positive to say about them.

Kathy, as I think back to the best instructors I had the privilege to have in my classes, they all were very open about their passion for the subject matter. They really made learning fun and relevant.

Pandora, you mentioned a very key element with your reference to listening. An effective instructor will be a great listener and take appropriate action on what they learn from the listening process. Good listening will require another skill of asking clarifying questions.

Maria, great post. Relationship building is key. If your students trust and respect the instructor then the learning objectives will be reached.

Kathy, a good policy is to treat your students the way you want to be treated. A rude student does not validate a rude response. Always be professional regardless of how your students act as you are the model you want them to follow.

Kathy, can you explain some of the techniques you use in the classroom to build a relationship with your students?

James Jackson

Carol, great point. A great instructor is able to adjust to the needs of the students.

An instructor must be a role model for the student, someone that can show professionalism and respect as well as an understanding of the student needs and the requirements of the course. On the first night of a new class, I find myself assessing the classroom for student needs and I set the ground rules for the class. The teaching style on that night might be more of a controller. I find myself using the combination of teaching styles of controller/buddy and I do believe it works. By the end of the course, I describe my teaching style as more of a guide. I believe a good instructor does assess and evaluate the classroom learning and adjusts the teaching to the needs of the particular student and the course being taught.

I agree alote of my students tell me they are not scared to ask me anything because i do not put them down.

I agree an instructor needs to know how to responed to the student without being rude.I believe you responed to the student one on one not with the class. I also try to see the problem from the student point of view

I agree you need to plan your lesson. I also like the idea of a B plan. Being enthusiastic will also motivate your students

Maria, it is always best to lead by example. By demonstrating the behaviors you want your students to follow, you provide a direct and constant model for them to follow.

in my opion i think professional and competent is very important. i also think you have to love what you are teaching

I believe that instructors should be professional and have high expectations of her/ him self in order to be an effective class manager. This will allow him/her to effectively be a role model and teach by example. An instructor should be of pristine moral character and have excellent people skills, genuinely caring for his/her student’s growth. Be well prepare at all times and consistent.

There are many traits of a successful instructor. The ones that comes foremost to my mind is to be proactive for their students, be a good listener and be there to give encouraging words to obtain their goal in nursing. A good instructor sets an example for his/her students by being organized, show that as an instructor they are very competent and receptive.

All traits of the Guide are very important for good classroom management. I believe being able to create good relations with your students while also being able to be very productive within the class are the most key things instructors can do in order to have a successful class. A good relationship with students will allow them to not be as scared to ask the instructor for help.

Maria, I like your comment on changing up of style according to the dynamic of your student group. Each group of students will bring different challenges and it does not matter if you have taught for 3 years or 30, the dynamics always change.
