I tell them that their degree is the beginning of the learning process, not the end. Some strategies I tell them is to give them real world examples, especially about employment/career situations that makes them think about continuing to learn. For instance, they can get certified in their field which improves their skills which can be used in their career.

Ziaul,
I would have to agree with you on the fact that students become more interested when you share experiences.

Shelly Crider

I share my real life experiences with the students
and that work. They become more interested and focused more.

Randolph,
I love that strategy. It works for many people....instructors included!

Shelly Crider

One of the strategies I use is to ask students where the would like to be in 6 months , 1 year , 5 years . Now tell me how are you going to get there ? How are you going to learn what you do not know ? Most student will say on line and then the next question is where on line, after you find what you are looking for I ask how are you going to analyze the information you read and how are you going to be able to apply and use what you have learned .Most young students think that online is the only place to get information is online ,this opens the door to asking what about libraries ,subscriptions, periodicals, trade publications these will help you on your learning endeavor's .Most of the time this is a real eye opener

Renae,
I believe your students will remember you for a long time with the resources you are helping them with.

Shelly Crider

Renae,
It is nice to give students ideas such as you have!

Shelly Crider

This is true. I try and go get information for our students that can also correlate to the trade or field they are taking. Because some fields work hand in hand.

hI, I ENCOURAGE Lifelong learning by motivating my students to go to Expos at least once a year. Showing them the importantce of taking extra curriculum classes to sharpen up on their skills. I also encourage DVDs, Business magazines to stay up on latest trends.

Kelley,
Knowledge is a must in the career world, but it is also what gets us through every day issues.

Shelly Crider

Tammara,
Good point, as networking can boost your career!

Shelly Crider

Tracey ,
Excellent...paycheck and how to increase it!

Shelly Crider

Our school is a vocational school and they receive a diploma in their chosen field. We always strive to educate our students the importanct of continuing their education. Not only to increase their salary but also to gain additional skills and knowledge to utilize in todays world.

I encourage them to seek out mentors. At any stage of your career, you will encounter someone who has more experience or knowledge. Most of the time they are very open to share their resources but need a willing pupil.

i try to incorporate the financial value one has to an employer if they stay up to date on latest technologies and how it can improve your paycheck at the end of the day. Instructing in a field that is ever-evolving requires my personal attention to self development, and I pass that on, advising students about professional organizations, and offering tutoring to students using that time to walk them through the process of enrolling in organizations that they will need in the future to enhance their learning skills. In the end, it's all about a paycheck, and your ability to learn and profit from it is a critical skill

Bruce,
This is very good. To tell students to join an association leaves the decisions wide open, but to give them some direction is very helpful.

Shelly Crider

Rachel,
Knowledge is Power! is a wonderful example! Students hear it, but when they see how the instructor is passionate about this, then it really sinks in.

Shelly Crider

William,
I like this statement! A student does like to see an instructor learning!

Shelly Crider

David,
Excellent point. There are always educational opportunities in every job!

Shelly Crider

I promote the Florida Professional Photographers association that I belong to and sometimes have recent graduates accompany me to meetings. We also host meetings at our campus here in Tampa to ensure a strong student turn out.
