I explain the importance of CEU's. For example, Not becuase you have to do it to keep your certifcations etc. I talk about how you leave work on a Friday and return on Monday and then suddenly there is a brand new procedure or piece of equipment you have to use immediately. Using my own experience and explaining this happened to me when "saftey" needles came out years ago. If I had not completed CEU's I would have had no clue what to expect, as this was a topic of one of my CEU courses. I also am enrooled in school myself working towards a higher degree level. I do explain this to my classes and students. I use it towards soft skills, time and stress management. I say I am a wife, a mother, an instructor, a student, a soccer coach (and anything else I happen to be doing at the time), it can be done! I usually end with the quote "Knowledge is Power!" It is one of my favorites!
My stratgy is by example it is one thing to be their instructor, but once they know that you too are a student it opens their eyes that learning simply does not stop.
I explain to them that the schooling part of there education is just the beginning. They will have to take courses with test at the end that will cost their employers thounsands of dollars. They must not think that learning is over when they graduate. Life is an education.
Teresa,
Love this! Everyone needs to be in some sort of professional organization.

Louis,
Current events is a great way to expose students to critical thinking!

Theresa,
Professional organizations are awesome to push towards students as well.

I encourage the students to join and get involved in our local professional organization's activities including the continuing education classes which will keep them updated in new trends etc. in the field.
this is a great idea. W always encourage our students to become involved in professional organizations. You not only can take advantage of learning opportunities that they offer, but you also have opportunities to enter act with professional in the field. I try to teach my students to see the leaves on the tree, not just the tree. As designers they always need to be aware of new developments in there field, also life in general, as they are not designing for designer but all walks of life.
Theresa,
I also agree that professional organizations not only assist with networking and job placement, but developing interpersonal skills. You have to keep abreast of technological changes. For example, joining AIGA is a great professional organization for Graphic Designers!
Read current events and compare various opinions on the same subject. Evaluate each different viewpoint.
I do the same, and agree that professional organizations not only assist with networking and job placement, but developing interpersonal skills. Many professional organizations conduct meetings that center around new and emerging technologies as well, which promote lifelong learning.
Janice,
Passion in an instructor pours into the students!

I encourage continually CE courses in dental hygiene. Although it is required I strongly encourage all of my students to delve into topics they are not familiar with-it just may stimulate a new passion!
Steven,
Bottom line....we as instructors need to assist!

The first thing that comes to mind is words of wisdom from Malcolm Knowles. He stated that for students to become selfâ€directed, lifelong learners, instructors should help students learn to:
1. Assess the demands of each task,
2. Evaluate their own knowledge and skills,
3. Plan their approach,
4. Monitor their progress, and
5. Adjust their strategies as needed.
These key metaâ€cognitive skills are critical to being an effective lifelong learners. In addition, research has shown that students tend not to apply metaâ€cognitive skills as well or as often as they should. They need the support of their instructors and significant time for practice.
Brian,
Joining professional groups is an excellent way to keep up on the news of your career.

I encourage my students to not only continue reading culinary trade magazines but join the American Culinary Federation as well so they can keep up with their skills through demonstrations and practical assessments.
Loren,
This is such a positive statement for the students to hear!
Shelly Crider
Donna,
Excellent example!! I am glad you share with the students....and us!!
