understanding the different generations
This is very important. You need to reach you whole class, there is no better way then understanding how they learn. With big classes it can be tough. I like to have them in groups and generally the will end up with other individuals with the same learning style. It makes teaching to the different generations a little easier and every one has a better grasp on the material.
Some times it is a struggle to reach everyone when you have a multigenerational classroom. But when you hit on a method that works for everyone, it is awesome to see.
I like to use groups and make sure that they rotate responsibilities on a lab assignments. They all need to be the doer and the secretary.
The group idea is a great strategy. At some point, it would be a good idea to have each group share the process involved in reaching a decision. Understanding the variety of ways conclusions can be reached would likely be very helpful.
I find that problem on my campus as well! Not just the need for instant feedback, but gratification, as well.
I am in Career Services, and I can't tell you how many times I have been approached with, "I filled out the application yesterday and I still haven't heard anything back..." Explaining to them that #1. They are not the ONLY applican, but that there may be 2 positions open, with 200 applicants, and ONE Chef to review applications...
AND
#2. They will need to follow up and show some real interest...
This all tends to make them snarky and grumbly!!
I see this more with my Gen Y cohorts than any other generation! They WANT the job, but not to WORK to/for it. They want the corportate 9-5 job NOW, instead of paying their dues in an industry that is notorious for long hours and tough love.
We try to be flexible, but sometimes it is difficult to get the message accross. Delayed gratification, & toiling to achieve the goal, is more rewarding and appreciated more in the long run, and with it comes greater satisfaction.
Amy,
I agree about generation Yers needing that instant response, and at times when they do not get it, they become a bit sarcastic and hostile.
I just finished the quiz for lesson two. The last question is do true. Gen Yers need instant feedback. They drive me nuts with wanting the test scores on the same day as the exam. I tell them all the time. There are 80 of you and 1 of me. I will not have the exams graded and in the system in one day. I just thought this was completely accurate.
Using more technology in the classroom has been an issue with some of my older students. I realized that I have had to limit the technology I use in the classroom because my 18 year old students are way more tech savay then my 55 year old students who does not feel comfortable on the computer. Instead of pushing the issue of computers, on day one I now show (through my power point) how to do certain required computerized testing on the computer a head of time. By showing them what I expect from them in 2 weeks it now gives all my students a chance to meet with me if they are having issues, dont understand, or want a refresher on how to use the computer testing system.
I agree that understanding the different generations is very important. In my job I teach every generation at the same time.
