Using Learning Theory Knowledge

What is the value of knowing about different learning theories in relation to instructional planning?

A classroom is a learning community where teaching must be learner-centered. Being aware of different learning theories and getting to know each student in a classroom through clear communication will ultimately improve the process for the indivduals.

I have found that understanding students' individual learning styles is key in differentiating instruction, learning activities and assessment (where possible). When students are given assignments that interest them, or that set them up for success, they are much more likely to be engaged.

Also, I have recently started putting more of my course content online, and have added sections to each unit that detail resources available to students based on learning styles.
For example: related articles and case studies for logical thinkers, or online games and interactive content for visual and kinesthetic learners.

It is very important to know the different leaning theories so the instructor can plan accordingly to the student's learning style.

I agree. Not all students are the same. We should be able to reach all students on all levels and personalities. By learning and implementing different styles, we are not only reaching the students but, also teaching them vital skill that will help them in their fields. Also, it helps them to learn more about themselves.

The value of knowing about different learning theories in relation to instructional planning helps an instructor in better planning to teach a class. Knowing how each on in the classroom likes to learn or what works best for them will help both the student and instructor create an effective learning environment.

I truly enjoyed learning about the different learning theories. I honestly know that I have some improvement to do.

Knowing each learning type will make the instructor more aware of the material he or she is going to present and in which way to present it. I like to lecture, have a hands on learning activity, assign reading, and give assignments that can be completed on the students time as well. I find playing trivia games with the material is a great way as well.

Knowing how each individual's brain learns, will enable the instructor's success in creating lesson plans that will fit each person.

You can plan an instructional outline that relates better to the students learning styles. Every class is different, so defining their learning styles first and then implementing tools to accommodate them would add to the overall learning experience.

Also i wuold like add that knowing all these learning theories,and inteligence modes, will make an instructor able to develope a specific teaching method for a particular class.

Knowing different learning styles is great, but the instructor themselves also has a learning style, so having available resources for that instructor to see other teaching styles is also important. I do not have a lot of resources (not even posters), so it has taken me several semesters of teaching to come up with different varieties of teaching something to try and reach other learning styles. I also try to repeat what I teach 2 to 3 times in different ways in one class period to help students comprehend stuff. Repetition, repetition, repetition, is also what I "preach" since a lot of the coursework in anatomy and physiology must be rote memory learned.

When I was studying for my Master's degree, I had to do classroom observations. It was very interesting to watch the student dynamics take place. One particular student embedded the "auditory" learning theory for me. I assumed she was not paying attention to the instructor; she sat at the back of the class, rarely looked toward the front of the classroom, and was drawing fairly extensive pictures on art paper. However, the teacher asked the class a question and she answered it very throughly! I was surprised and embarrassed that I had misjudged her by her classroom actions.
Now that I am teaching and I see a student that may not have their eyes on me, I try to remember that girl and often I am right.

Being aware of different learning theories can help bring variety to the classroom. Once you are aware of what type of learners exist in your class, you can focus on providing activities that reach each type of student over the course of the class. It may be beneficial for students to be aware of their own learning style as well. This will prevent some of the frustration that would come with having difficulty with a certain type of assignment. However, it would also be important to then explain the benefits of continuing to put effort into activities that may not come naturally to you, and encouraging that type of personal growth/development through learning.
