I learned to manage emails from students and that online courses requrie a more dedictated frame work with time scheduling
Successfully managing an online course demands good communication skill to diffuse conflict and address undesirable behaviors such as those seen in disruptive or "noisy" learners. An engaged instructor will look for the warning signs leading to attrition such as alienation, and engage students early and often through discussions and personal messages.
In this module I learned that it is extremely important to make sure students are informed that there can be an "Ask three before me" peer question format to get clarity on certain subjects or content covered. Students can have the opportunity to ask questions of their fellow peers before directing some of their inqui to myself the teacher. You can assign a "buddy or partner" to assist in smaller questions other students may have to he'll clarify any work that many be assigned.
I learned that the online learning environmnet requires a special level of organization and record keeping that may not be necessary in a traditional classroom environment. It is also important to set behavior and performance expectations for the students, just like you would in a classroom environment.
Good communication is important.
I think there were a number of good points that will help if I ever get setup with online discussions. I wish I had these lessons as documents. Need to turn on my screen recorder!
One think I found interestin was the question about method off communication. I can tell you this, out of my 62 students, only about 1/3rd of them check email daily. I can send them a text message and get a response.
I like the remind.com tool for sure.
This module is new to my teaching, as I am a middle school teacher and helping students participate appropratly in an online manner is new to me. Conflict resolution is something I would do in a face-to-face situation, and with working with adolescents, online conflicts will be a new challenge. These tips will help
To this point in my 37 year career, I have not experienced conflict in the classroom. I accredit that to my level of interacting with the students and the fact that they must apply to become part of my program. Being part of a program they are vested in the learning process. I have enjoyed learning the types of students that can wreak havoc in the online classroom and will take these suggestions to heart.
I've been working on improving my records management. I've found myself overwhelmed with paperwork.
I think it is extremely important to emphasize the importance of technical support in order to avoid class attrition.
In order to be effective as an online instructor, effective communication is utilized to address all types of learners. Noisy learners, disruptive, procrastinators, etc. can be addressed with specific strategies and methods. Conflicts can arise and need to be identified and ameliorated by the instructor. To avoid attrition, instructors must be able to identify issues such as work load, family issues, etc. They can avoid student attrition by offering incremental support and feedback to students.
Keeping students on tack and on point is important. If a student want to test the systems have a little chat with them to remind them of the guidlines
I learned that although not in a traditional class, some of the same issues are there.
I learned different ways that students can disrupt a learning environment and effective ways to manage it. It is really important to understand the rules and regulations of the organization and to ensure that your actions reflect those guidelines.
I learned about behaviors can be distruptive to learning through an online course. I also learned strategies on how to identify students that may be struggling or need extra assistance with an online course.
Reply to Lisa Herrera's post:This is something I think about often while teaching 9-12 students. I have 140 students total, and have not committed to daily, individualized contacts. I do offer office hours, Google Meets, 1:1 chat sessions, and reply to emails in a timely manner.
I learned the importance of managing the e-learning environment.
I have gained new insigt on how Learners may exit an e-learning program prematurely, for a number of reasons:
- They feel alienated.
- The workload is too heavy.
- Competing responsibilities.
- Technical issues.
As an online facilitator I can take some measures to reduce attrition.
This module provided tips for handling challenges and managing conflict. It is best to always know your institution's policies and remind stuents of them when there are challenges of students who push the envelope/
Something that I learned during this module is the idea to have a specific area to post questions that opens up responses by fellow classmates. This does two very important things; first is that when a student is able to help another student, it will reinforce learning and demonstrate that they student has learned a specific objective. Secondly, it will take the load off the instructor having to respond to so many individual emails.
