I just remind myself that I can only change what I have control of. Once I remind myself of that I can usually find away to work through it.

Breathing in deep breaths is often a good technique. This seems to clear the mind Exhaling the negative will setmyou up for positive thoughts.

One of the best methods I have used is to use the 4-8-8 breathing technique. Breath in for four seconds, hold for 8 seconds, the release slowly for 8 seconds. I find this to be particulary effective at giving me an immediate relaxation.

Stephanie,

Venting can be good if you have the right person listening to you. Sometimes collaboration with the wrong person only leads to more negative thoughts. Good conversation is where you can not only express your frustration but begin to discuss solutions that may work.

Be sure to pick you people you vent too very carefully.

I have found that "ventilating" to either another instructor at the school or a fellow Certified Surgical Technologist helps me the most. It's great stress relief for me to be able to express my aggravation/frustration to someone who relates to it, and get it out of my system, as opposed to keeping it all bottled up inside me. I also lend an ear whenever a fellow instructor needs to do the same thing!

Sheila,
Some of our escapes can be harmful to our health. The key to stress relief is creating a balanced life. Each person collects on this balance with mental exercise, physical exercise, leisure and spiritual rejuvenation.

The wrong way I have handled stress is eating fast food and talking too much to my co-workers. The positive way is I laugh, I try to find humor in my day and I spend more time with my daughter who is 8 and children have a great way of enjoying the simple things in life.

It is excellent to have an outlet to stress. It is important to lead your life with a balance.

i sometimes just need to get away for 30 minutes outside of the workplace, to relive stress.

I agree but when you are one of the low men on the totem pole your influence only goes so far. If I can present a workshop or company that does workshops on stress management to my supervisors I might be able to help a school that is delaing with a lot of change.

Ownership of the process is the key. If you can mentor your employees to follow your example of how to deal with stress is the key to successful transfer of your talents.

What is the best way to start a stress reduction program at your workplace? Are thier companies out thier that will come into a workplace to evalute and assit in setting up a stress or teach these technique and more list in your course?

It is a good practice to find an avenue to get away somethimes. I often recall my fathers statement to me when I would be stressed or depressed. He would say "Gary, the sun will come up tomorrow!"

Spending time with family and focusing on the brighter side of things lighten the load of workplace stress. With the kind of economy we face at this time, tons of stressful situations arise. However, keeping your head above the water and keeping a happy heart with humor despite the hostile environment help one attain a sound and sane mind:)

Your perception is right on for some people. They get very comfortable in their familiar structure and when it gets changed they panic. Change is inevitable for all of us. Sometimes it is ucomfortable but we need to have a way of responding to the stress. Balance in your life helps each of us respond. Exercise, mental challenges, leisure and spiritual reflection will help us progress in our lives.

Some of my instructors get stressed when changes occur, it's amazing how stressful they get. We just put in place a new curriculum, the staff that had been there the longest, were the one's that were stressed. Changes needs to happen, otherwise, no improvement occurs. We tend to get cozy with our normal everyday pattern and when something is changed, people get stressed immediately and complain. People need to understand that change is not always a bad thing and stress, as long as it remains in a moderate level, is healthy. We just need to take a moment and relax, take a deep breath, get our thoughts together and make a plan.

The best way I have found to handle workplace stress is to lock my office door and meditate for about 15 or 20 minutes. I also walk around the parking lot sometime during the day to clear the cobwebs from my mind.

Exercise is an excellent tool for handling stress. Each of us should match this up with a balance in our life. Exercise, mental relaxation, spiritual reflection and leisure.

I find that by doing small stress relieving exercises in the workplace helps to relieve stressors. Five minutes of yoga or other relaxation techniques can do wonders to refocus on the stressful tasks you may encounter during the day.
