I use a lot of the baby boomer communication traits. I like to a answer questions very thoroughly and prefer phone or face to face meeting.
Texting, Instra gram ( I think that is how you spell it), Facebook, my space, etc....It's funny becasue I actually just got a phone with the perks and whistles and it's actually great. I have resisted having internet on my phone for years but now enjoy it.
It looks like you have a blended communication preference. How do you think having a blended style can help you in your role?
I believe I'm part of the generation X. I like to have fun while working as well as be the top performer. I'm very competitvie, however, I feel I could also be group in the baby boomer generation. I want everything to be explained to me in detail and I have a tendency to go overboard with work.
It's good that you are aware of your preference and that you understand how technology has changed the game a bit. How can you modify your preferred style to better connect with the Millennials or others that might not prefer face-to-face communication?
As a Gen X member, i can really appreciate a face to face conversation to discuss any and all issues at hand. Technology has become the norm for most day to day cummunication, which makes me feel like we forget what it's like to actually speak to one another.
It looks like you have characteristics from various generational styles. How do you think that helps you when communicating with you 'customers'?
I'm a Gen Xer. I'm very loyal, respect authority and I'm hard working, much like a Traditionalist. I value equality and tend to obsess over work and be very competitive like a Baby Boomer. I enjoy learning about new technology and find myself very team oriented like a Millenial. But I'm a true helicopter parent.
Thank you for your post Diane. How do you think you need to adjust your communication to better connect with other generations?
I am a generation X, but I do like to communicate face to face.
I know it will help me to know how to talk to different generations. I am already talking differently to my colleges that are older than me and the ones younger and they are responding better to what I have to say to them.
It's interesting how we may pick up traits from other generations. How do you think knowing this will help you in cross-generational communication?
I am a Gen X but I really enjoy face to face meetings rather than over text or email.
It's great that you're aware of your preference so that you can intentionally adapt as needed to work with the preferred style of others. Thank you for your post!
I'm also a Gen Xer and totally agree with Allan. I'm in admissions as well but find that I fall back into wanting to connect more with the phone. I have a lot of the Boomer attributes.
I am part of generation X and relate to their prefrences, however, I have a bit of the traditionalist in me. I prefer face to face meetings. I also do take people at their word. If someone says something to me, I expect it be truthful and that's how I express myself.
My communication preference is that of face to face meetings. Nothing gets misconstrued or confused and is the direct approach that I feel is most affective.
This is great awareness Tim. It seems like you already understand the importance of adjusting your communication style and have even learned to like a different generational style. If only the teenagers adjusted to ours!
Dr. Jean Norris
Well, GenXers seem to prefer email or calling, but I really prefer texting. It seems less invasive, and I can get to responding to texts at my convenience. I guess that comes from the "independence" side of me which does relate to the traditional GenXer. I must admit that I didn't get hooked onto texting though about a year and a half ago. This is well after my teenage kids were already using it as their preferred communication method!
So what is your preference Anitere? Is it consistent with your generation?
