Your Communication Methods

we prefered to use face to face method of comunication because the capacity to answer question at the moment it is important for the courses that we have.

My face to face communication would have to be the strongest. I have strong people skills and possess a positive attitude which helps in bonding with potential students.

My preferred method is face to face so I can read their body language

I prefer face to face communication. That way you are getting the full picture. I find it way too easy to misinterpret someone's meaning in a text message, given the lack of tone and body language. It's so easy to lend your own interpretation to the senders words. This is one area that I need to work on when it comes to communication.

My favorite method of communication is email. Mainly because I have proof. I need to work on my phone skills due to lack of confidence.

I strongly enjoy speaking face to face with a student. I feel as though I can vividly get my point across, and through their feedback and body language I am immediately able to understand how they were able to interpret our conversation.

I prefer to communicate face to face. There is more of a connection during face to face and I can better check for understanding through body language.

Great awareness, Rachel! Is definitely easier to know what the other person is feeling in a face to face conversation. Check back in and let us know how it goes with your written communication!

That's great, Shawn! It seems most people today would take the email route, even if they are right down the hall! Why do you think that is?

telephone communication is a strength as I have had many opportunities to develop this skill set. The job I ever held was working as a telemarketer selling coins. Having to build rapport with people using tone and humor has later aided in face to face communication as well.

My preferred method is in person for all the reasons discussed in the lesson. I am pretty direct in my conversationa and interations which sometimes can cause issues in my email communication. For these reasons,if I am able to get up and walk down the hall to speak with a colleague, I will do that before ever sending an email.

My preferred method of communication is face to face. I can utilize the listener’s responses to alter my approach in real time to better send my message. My biggest area of opportunity would be with my written communication. My messages often times seem cold because I prefer to keep them short and sweet to avoid any opportunities for confusion that would compromise the message. I feel that stating my intentions or purpose first would help and is something that I will be implementing moving forward.

Carly, That is terribly interesting! What is something that you can do that will keep your hands busy while you are meeting with a student? It sounds like you are a very kinesthetic learner!!

Russell, Great insights! Thank you for posting. Knowing that sometimes topics can be too big for email, it's important you recognized face-to-face is sometimes the better option. Keep it up!

I need to work on my listening skills in person. On the phone I can be doodling or taking notes or fiddling about. However in person without being able to occupy myself with something physically I find that my attention tends to wander.

Greetings Dr. Norris,

I prefer communication through email most of the time. The reason for this form of communication is that I can do this within my time frame as I am in class 8 hours a day. I can organize my thoughts and describe the message I am trying to convey. I always proof read my emails before sending. Depending on the complexity of the content of the email, I will occasionally make a phone call in order to not miscommunicate. Some topics can be very difficult and too "wordy" through an email and the main points get lost.

In class however, face to face is 100% of the communication used. The body language element is huge. Much more so than I thought. This course will be most helpful in at least being aware of how body language can have a huge impact, either positively of negatively.

Best regards,

Elyse, Great awareness! It's so important to take a minute and "reset" our minds and attitudes to make sure we are giving each student the customer service they deserve. Thank you for posting!

I prefer email communication due to the tracking and recording abilities. I am able to make sure the information needed to be discussed is clear and concise and it's the easiest to reference when I need reminded of what's been discussed.

Many of our prospective students live outside of the state prior to enrolling. This makes phone communication important, especially when building the relationship early on. I do struggle the most with phone communication though. Towards the end of the day, I find my tone less and less enthusiastic as it can be tiring due to the energy put into these conversations. Taking breaks is key. I've learned that while I may want to just get these tasks taken care of in one sitting, it's best to take a few breaks to regain focus and energy.

face to face and telephone.

With both I seem to come alive. I've worked for institutions were we followed a script and at times appeared robotic. Now even though we not technically script guided at my institution, I use the fundamentals from the script and infuse it with a lot of personality and attitude. With both methods, you feed off the individual in front of you and when they see your excitement or hear it they become excited. The rapport is established and they no longer view you as a salesperson.

Mirenia, Great awareness! How can work on improving this form of communication?
