Once again, great awareness, Jeriann. Using the 3 R's (repeat, rephrase, reflect) can be very helpful in improving your listening skills and increasing your rapport with others. The best news - you can apply this skill to any conversation you're having, be it personal or professional. Try it out today, in your next conversation. Good luck!
It is really surprising to learn that product knowledge is the least used connecting essential. When I speak to students / potential students they always have a lot of questions about the applications we educate them on. I feel product knowledge should be given a higher percentage based on what type of school your doing admissions for, but I still agree that attitude and people skills are the first impression in making a connection, therefore the most important. The sales skills are what I will work on the most. I feel this can be the most difficult. Problem solving is a huge factor and can really make the buyer flattered because you are going the extra mile to figure something out for them.
Once again I need to develop my listening skills in order to build a better rapport with others. I need to work on repeating what is being said, rephrasing and reflecting.
I think working on rapport. Spending more time on small talk instead of just starting into the presentation. As i have been workingon that, the next step is to work on transitions from small talk to starting presentation, instead of an abrupt end and quik start to the presentation. I feel sometimmes the student may feel like we just stop talking and go straight to the presentation.
Mirroring vocal tone and language is a great way to begin building rapport with your student. This helps the student feel as though you are not that different from them which can help them relax and open up to you. Great observations!
I think that work constantly with people of different backgrounds help us easily to identify emotional reactions. It’s very important mirroring voice and language to build successful rapport. Students will feel confident and open for our suggestions.
Interesting insights, Zulma. Help me understand what you mean by body language and being in control to assist you in successfully building rapport.
body language and being in control
Creating common ground with your students is essential to help them feel comfortable sharing with you. What are some ways you currently work to create common ground with your students?
These are all wonderful elements for you to be aware of as you work to build rapport with your students, Cinthia. Mirroring can help your students feel that you are more like them than different, which can help ease their nerves. You can also do this with your voice tone. Checking your attitude before you meet with every student is a great way to be sure that you are in the right frame of mind for the interaction. Best of luck as you incorporate each of these into your approach.
Creating a common ground with them.
Mirroring, voice control and my attitude.
This is a great placed to start, Doreen. It sounds like you plan to take your time with each individual and be sure you are on the "right track" with the student before responding. You mention providing feedback, what type of feedback do you plan on offering to the student?
By building one step at a time, and providing feedback more often.
Think before my answers so I can respond appropriately.
I think, overall, better listening skills...
mirroring is something i am going to try to work on. i had not thought about it before but i think that being aware of it can be a helpful tool for me in my work performance.
That's great, Renee. I'm curious - was there ever a time that you couldn't find something in common with your student regarding the school? What might you do in that situation?
I always try to find something that we have in common in regards to the school, so they can relate.
Awesome, Antonio! Reframing can be such a powerful and positive tool to use with anyone! What specifically are you planning to do to help you master reframing?
In my current postion I want to master the art of reframing. This will work well with prospective students, this is is an excellent form of overcoming objectives.
