The fact that you refer to the catalog to answer questions and resolve issues allows your students to understand the importance of the information. Hopefully, they will begin to use the catalog as the reference it is meant to be.

I find that the catalog lays the grounds of what the school policies are and what is expected of the student. Whenever there is a question of how I manage my class as far as dress code or attendance I open up the school catalog and show the student the page . I encourage them to re-read their catalog, it has personally helped me whenever I do have a challenging student and I refer to it . I feel once they see for themselves they realize that I am not just making up these polices.It is actually in writing.
The catalog is part of the legal agreement between the school and the student. The content of the catalog must accurately represent the educational experience the student will have.
It is a wealth of knowledge to both student and employee, and it adds to the transparency we want to provide to those students (which in turn, helps to build the trust necessary for the student to be sucessful. And of course, their success is our success).

The catalogs are an import part of the perspective students gathering information on our school as well as the schools disclosure and transparentcy on our guidelines, student services, start dates, academic information, financial aid information programs of study and course descriptions
It is a reference for the school, its employees and the students. All of these constituents will always have the "reference" of policies and procedures. This way, there are no "one offs" or making up policies throughout the student's academic career.

For the student, it represents a promise from the school; a promise of what the school offers and an outline of what the student's responsibilities will be as they pursue their education. Understandably catalogs provide the students with the basic knowledge to be successful. How often have we discovered that a student's issue falls outside the realm of the catalog and they turn to staff and faculty for a solution. How is this handled at your school?
