I have learned through taking this course that a few practices regarding early intervention need to be rethinked.
1. we need a way the student can make us aware they feel they need help
2. stop lecturing those students we have identified as at risk
3. work on building a culture of student success
Does your campus have a suggestion box now, John? If so, how will you get students to offer suggestions?
Getting students to actually use a suggestion box can be challenging, but your plan could lead to quick, positive results by involving the decision makers. Without that, the box won't be used. Good luck.
Set up a suggestion box for students to see what is the common point to improve upon.
Next, i would meet with education director, mangers, and student services to come up with a plan to go about improvement ideas.
Finally, implement the ideas and see how the students take to the adjustments made, based on there suggestions.
Actually, we use a program called SIJ (students in jeopardy). We track students with low grades, a lot of missed time and any skipped courses. This helps us identify those in need. Now I just need to find students in my class to help.
Larry, have you thought though the mechanics of this? How will you identify those in most need? Where will you provide these services?
I plan on devoting more time to Advising, Mentoring and Tutoring students, especially those in need.
1. Always being open minded with them .
2. Work side by side with them , setting the example .
3. Never ask them to do something that you would not do yopurself .
A good list, Antonio. What are you going to do to address the topics?
1. Housing is a big issue , since most of our students come from out of state , this is 1 issue that always needs to be discussed .
2. Transportation would be the next topic , since alot of students have part time jobs and have to pay rent and can't always afford to own a vehicle.
3. Means of survivel , like having enough income to live while away from home .
1. Identify students within the classroom setting that may be experiencing issues both academically and socially that may be interfering with couse success.
2. Address issues directly with student to identify what course of action may or must be taken either at the instructorial or staff level.
3. Follow up with student and staff on regular intervals to make minor corrective actions to benefit the student's successful outcome.
The three ways to better your rentetion is to 1, listen tother student's situation. Maybe you can resource that student to the right dept. to help him. 2 follow throu to let the student know that you have some concern to his situation and 3, foloow with the sesource that you sent the student for help to see if anything has been resolved. I beleive this will keep our rention up.
It depends on the conditions of the problem. If it is something that can not wait, he will deal with the concern at the moment. If it ia one that can wait for a day or so, he will get others in put, then take it from there.

Does the owner directly respond to concerns presented in the minutes or work through the management team? Who prepares the minutes? What are the expectations from the department members?
We do have monthly department meetings to work on the problems in that department. The minutes to our meetings then go to the owner of the school. So he goes over those concerns.

1.work with all office staff to help any student in need.2. offer my help to any student that i can reach.3. tutoring students will always help retention.
#1. Talking about the good jobs out in the work place. #2. State the advantages on becoming a succesful Tech. and #3. Put the student in the drivers seat and ask them who would they hire for their business?
Meet with students that have a day of missing time or a failed test. Discuss what the issue may have been and work to help them over come the challenge.
Work with Instructor staff to ensure a positive learning atmosphere in the class.
Follow up with students that made comments on the course evaluations and understand what their suggestions and challenges were understood how (I, We) can better deliver the material and provide a successful learning environment.
1. Mentoring assignments will be given out on 1/6/09. Was already schdeuled. The method of assignment has been improved.
2. I will direct that three specific staff people be required to take this course. I want them on the same channel. Good course.
3. Our number one retention effort for '09 is our revised curriculum. It utilizes a team teaching approach in that a series of classes is treated as a unit with a set group of instructors. It is designed to enhance problem identification and to institute remedial action early in the students' careers. It will start 1/5/09. It has been in development for ten months, has all the necessary approvals and is ready to roll out. It views retention as a "holistic" issue and addresses it accordingly.
During the next 30 days, here are the things I can do:
1. Add retention as a permanent topic to the agenda when meeting with both Pre-Career and Professional Program managers and staff.
2. Connect the topic of retention to other topics to encourage awareness and discussion. For example, the nursing staff would look at retention when they are discussing skill delivery.
3. Raise awareness of facilitators through discussion in the pre-career areas where there appears to be less of an understanding of how not reaching one's goals can affect retention.
My ideas stem from the administrative area.
Getting students involved in events is a challenge many of us have struggled with. Have you found any practices that have been successful?
