1. To give feedback to students on their progress. I have been surprised to find students who "think" they did well on a quiz only to find out they did poorly. This is a "realilty" check for them. On the other hand nothing succeeds like success and those who do well are motivated to continue the time spent preparing to continue the success. I always go over the quiz/test/exam with the students when returning their papers and we discuss where the information was found or what information was needed to come to the correct conclusion.
2. Teacher self evaluation. If 50% or more of the students fail a quiz/test I have to accept the responsibility for not getting the concepts across to the students. I then re-teach the lesson and give another quiz/test with the same material covered.
3. Handing out a study guide with important/testible material is a proactive way of cluing the students what material is most important to spend time learning.
You must have a way of measuring their knowledge on course content. Grading needs to be fair and include a variety, tests, papers, group projects, in class activities, etc.
to let them discover what they have learned.
Reasons for Evaluating :
How is my performance introducing the Objectives needed to be successful in the course
Have I been successful in evaluating their performance
To reinforce Hard work by students, and strengthen study habits of those who need it
It is a good tool to help you see what your class needs are and it helps the students know how they are doing and what they need to work on.
Hi Marivic:
Very true. Students really don't mind evaluations if they help demonstrate progress. (It's the poor grades some students don't care for!). In fact, more frequent evaluations are better than just a few quizzes and a test.
Of course, some of that advice is based on how long the course is. But we do have a great opprtunity to offer encouragement and supporive suggestions after we give an evaluation and as we're reviewing the assessment, convey to students a caring, kind, and sincere teacher willing to help their students to be successful.

Hi Linda:
Yes, in fact really, it's a necessary tool.
For me, reasons to evaluate have to do with measuring to what degree a student met the course objectives. If these are written well, then a student has a expectation of what to study, the teacher knows what to teach, and the test measures the student's performance on obtaining the knowledge.

Hi Ken:
You've listed good reasons.
For me, it really has to do with measuring to what degree did the student meet the course objetives. If these are accurate and well written, when we measuere (evaluate)performance, we'll be close to estimating how well a student might use the knowledge or perform the skills in the work setting.

I agree with many of the previous posts. Evaluation is a good tool for both the student and the instructor. It allows the student to gauge their own progress in the course, while giving the instructor the opportunity to assess if learning is actually occurring and whether or not changes need to be made to the curriculum or delivery style. Evaluation becomes especially important as the student nears the end of the program, in order to assess their readiness to enter their chosen career.
Evaluating students is an important and effective tool for the instructor to let the instructor know how well he/she is teaching and relating to the students.
To measure the students mastery of the subject.
Not only in the testing format, but by being
able to verbalize a response to an oral question.
Skills testing is critical if your job is patient
care. Necessary skills are mandatory to graduate.
Hi James:
Good points.
A simplified reason is we want to be sure we are acurately measuring student performance against the course objectives, student learning outcomes, and readiness for future classes or more advanced topics.
Our contemporary society requires thatr we have objective, content-based grading systems. There are many such systems. But we want to make sure the learning occurs. That's most important. Next is the assessment of that learning.

Hi Eon:
Two great reasons! Measuring student performance is part of the instructional process, just is delivering the lessons or developing skills.
Courses that have student learning outcomes and course objectives need some objective method to identify to what degree the outcomes were met. So, student assessments and evalution is a needed component as much as any other.

There are two main reason why I think students should be evaluated, one it to see how much of course content they have grasped and two, how best they can apply it real world scenarios. These two factors can determine how good of an instructor you are or see where students may need help in understanding subject.
the following are reasons to evaluate students:
1) To ensure that the students are completing all the required material successsfully.
2) To inform the instructor what the students are /are not comprehending the material being discussed and taught.
3)Also to help the instructor know how well the information is covered or should there be adjustments made.
Hi David:
Good points.
I think the basic reason is we have to measure to what degree we were successful in getting the student to learn the couse objectives and meet the student learning outcomes.

Hi Jean:
I'm a believer in frequent status updates. I use electronic gradebooks and pretty much everything a student sees is instananeous from when I enter it.
But part of the reason to evaluate students is not just sharing grades and points, but also conveying something hum - caring, kind words courteosly conveyed with support and encouragement. Students will respond to advice when given in this manner.

Hi Alex:
Right. Through assessment we can measure to what degree students have mastered or benefited from the learning experience. Soemtimes this can also reflect on the teachers performance. Other times, some subjects are just more difficult than others.

Hi Susan:
Yes, true. For me, I believe the core of why we evaluate is to measure to what degree our students have learned, have met the course objectives, the student learning outcomes, and readiness for the skills and knowledge they'll need in the work setting they're being trained for.
Regards, Barry
The reasons for evaluations are it helps you know what kind of job you are doing as an instructor and it produces a final students grade for the course.
