When students enter the class and they see that the instructor is prepared , it sets the tone for the class. If the instructor is "ready to go", the students will in turn be "ready to go". When time is wasted it creates a sense of urgency at the end, important information is left out. The end result is that the students will suffer, lose interest and possibly drop out.
Its better to be prepped and ready so a "cushion" is in place to allow for the unexpected.

What do you suggest?

Being organized and prepared to teach is to me 60% of the job. It is especially important to be prepared/organised the first few class meetings. As we all know about that "first impression" theres no going back .Keep yourself on track, dont spend too much time on any one subject. Review your notes the day before ,keep notes for yourself.

Clara,
Right. We garner the respect, trust, and attention of students when they see we are prepared, serious, and ready for each and every class.

Kellie,
Yes, going in prepared gives me the feeling of being in charge, ready to deliver, giving my best. Unprepared makes me feel a bit shaky, and I agree that students can probably sense that their instructor is a little off on those days.

I've been in both situations, unprepared and prepared. It is so much more stressful when you are not prepared, I feel like the students know it and it makes me self conscience from the begining of class. Being prepared shows that you are organized and know what your doing.

Linda,
This is the beauty and benefit of good preparation. Having enough time and opportunity to spend with students is so important, I believe is some cases, it can make the difference between a successful student and one who is merely marginal. Of course we want optimal results for all our students.

Although it takes some advance planning and forethought, being organized and prepared to teach makes the experience so much more enjoyable for all parties involved. I generally arrive 15-30 minutes early to make sure the classroom is set up properly and to make any copies I may need for that particular class. I also want to be available to the students both before and after class in case they need some extra help. Most of all, when I'm organized and prepared I know I will have ample time to cover all the material AND enough time to cover spontaneous topics that often come up from student questions. That is often the most fun and highly educational time for the students and for me to share extra knowledge.

Brenda,
I can say that to the students, the instructor is the representative of the institution. Therefore, when good preparation and readiness are regularly displayed and demonstrated, students will see both their instructor and institution as an entity that cares and is interested in the success of each student.

If you are not an organized instructor, you are not setting a good example for the student to be organized and prepared for class. I think it also may lead to student perceptions that they are not getting the education that they are entitled and paid for.

Hayvelises,
I believe adult learners want and expect their instructors to be ready to instruct and assist them toward their learning goal. And that's what we're paid to do anyway.

It is a great opportunity for effective classroom management. By setting the tone at the start that the class is run in an organized manner, students are more likely to come prepared to learn.
