Lisen carfuly to the studants
Hi Linda,
You certainly have a challenge in having to work and instruct from two different texts. Your use of student groups is a good idea so the students can discuss even more the content and concepts shared in the texts and help each other understand more clearly what they need to know.
Gary
I am currently using 2 different books for the same class and have had to develop different class note for each one. I have divided my class into 2 differnt groups in order to be able to instruct from their books. I use a lecture for both groups, but point out what is important in each book. Then the students ask questions about anything they do not understand
Hi Trina,
Welcome to the profession. As long as you do learn as you go you will continue to grow in your knowledge and expertise. Always be on the lookout for new instructional strategies that you can use in your classes. This will bring variety to your classes and help to keep you excited about teaching. I wish you much success in your teaching.
Gary
I am new as an instructor and learning as I go.
I try to keep my lectures short with frequent stops/breaks in between for question and answer sessions, be sure to keep it related to the subject matter, students like to wander off the subject if you don't keep them focused. We do frequent hands on practice in the lab as well.
to try and incorporate all the model, manager and motivator.
Hi Jennifer,
Welcome to the profession. Keep up your excitement about the field and teaching. We need instructors like you that like what they are doing and enjoy helping students achieve their career goals.
Gary
This is my first instructor position, and I feel that being put with other instructors to observe their methods will give me great incite, so that I may incorporate that with my teaching styles. I can't wait to help my students succeed in the career that awaits them.
Watching and talking with other instructors about tips and tricks.
Hi Ernest,
Good plan. By watching others you get select the best you see from them and then apply to your own classroom/lab. This will not only help you to increase your skills it will help you to avoid making some of the common mistakes that come with teaching.
Gary
I watch other instructors as to subject delivery and then watch how the students react to it. I get a better idea of what works and what doesn't.
I employ all styles I don't have a set one I base
the style on the students. But one area where I
am consistant is that I am a motivator, and I like to make learning fun because of my love of Dentistry. I use visuals, handouts and games
I make up.
Hi Russell,
You hit upon a key concept of learning and that is building a solid foundation. If the students get that solid foundation they then will be ready for the next phase of the course and as you say it makes it much easier for them and you.
Gary
Getting feed back from my students on what they have learned and does it make sence to them (the student). Making sure that the students understand a particularly difficult concept or system will make my job much easer for the next step in the course and for the student in the field. By asking these questions of the students I can adjust the way the material is presented or give a better explination that may relate to some thing they already know.
KARI I TO USE THE TOOLS YOU HAVE FOR MENTIONED AND ALSO FIND THAT A GOOD BALANCE OF INFORMATION IS IMPORTANTE, I,M FORTUNATE THAT I HAVE ACCESS TO THE INTERNET THRU MY POWER POINT I ALSO FIND THIS VERY HELPFULL. BETWEEN EACH CLASS I HAVE BETWEEN 3 TO 5 DAYS THIS GIVES ME TIME TO OBSERVE OTHER TEACHERS AND I FIND THIS EXTREMELY HELPFULL .I ALSO FIND YOUR STATEMENT ABOUT CLASS DYNAMICS , FLEXIBILITY AND CREATIVITY DOSE CHANGE FRO CLASS TO CLASS. BILL.C.
Hi Kari,
You are doing many good things as they relate to instruction. Your forum response lists a variety of delivery options you are using and I know your students appreciate it. The fun part about teaching is that even though you are teaching the same course over and over the students that come in each phase make the course different. This is why teaching is so much fun. Variety is a key component of what we do.
Gary
I currently employ many different techniques to help my students get the most from the material. I use games, group learning, hands-on, lecture, power point presentations, and videos among others. I feel that I give the students a good balance of information and application. The one thing that I do not often get a chance to do is observe my peers to see what techniqes they employ in their classes. I am always open to new ideas and am constantly looking for new ways of teaching the material. It is impossible to teach the same material the same way to every class. Each class dynamic is different and requires a bit of flexibility and creativity.
I think I can use all if the info provided in the modules. It is so informative.
Thank you, Janet, that was good and timely input for me...
