I am in the same boat as you! This will be my first time teaching and I know that I will be either as young as the students or even younger. I know I will have to be firm in order to gain respect from the students. But, I will also be able to be compassionate towards them, being that I know how it feels to be a student :). I am really looking forward to my new teaching venture!

First of all, I am a firm believer that the experience of other instructors is invaluable. I can read books and attend seminars, but nothing is more important and beneficial than asking other instructors what works for them and incorporating some of the skills they have utilized as their instructional style into personal current practice.

Hands-on mixed with visuals and activites that get the students up and moving around.

I can use my 25 years in the field to help suppliment the curriculum, also work to define the type of students I have and what learing tactics will help them in the most effective way.

Hi Joann,
When people refer to acting in the teaching context I believe they are referring to how a professional educator has to "act" as the class leader. That is it may be the tendency of a personality type to come into a setting and not talk much in a group. As the teacher this is not possible since as class leader you have to be prepared, organized and ready to offer the course content. So even though one's personality may be a bit on the shy side you have to develop a teaching style that will get you to put your personality out there in front of the students. You are right about being phony as an actor, that won't work for the students at all. So be yourself in the context of being a the class manager, model and motivator and you will do fine.

I do not think it is acting that we do to teach. I think it is just our knowledge and how to adjust to our students. I guess it could be called acting thats a hard one. If our students thought we were acting they would call us on it.

teaching can be close to being an actor so i put alot of famous people in my style

I have found by sitting in listening to other
instructional style.I have learned lot more.It has made me a better one.Or have shown me more
what i need to work on.

Hi Joann,
Good plan. I am sure you are very effective with your students.

I feel that my organizational skills and pre class preparation are my two weakest links

I agree that teaching to multiple learning styles helps the entire class see a subject in different ways. I believe that it aids them in knowledge retention...

self learning, motivation and the ability to develope my skills as an instructor.

I would learn in detail what I am teaching to better my self as an instructor to develope my self and my students.

To set up my class and help the students better

I think this is a good thing and will help me in my class

I love that way having the students interact and contribute to a discussion I think they learn more. At least that is what they have told me previously/

I need to know my materials at every angle. Once I am comfortable with my subject, I will do my lesson plan. In my lesson plan I write down different ways of presenting the information. I will then instruct the students but I do not lecture 1 hour straight. I stop to see if they have any questions and then I start asking the students some questions to get some interaction going. This is difficult the first lecture because the students seem to be more timid at the beginning. By the second lecture they know my style and they begin to interact. With this process one has to remain on topic do not let sidebars occur.

Being a former student at the facility i teach at, gives me a outlook on what i found to be a effective teaching style...

I love interacting with students from other classes in a lab setting, questioning their understanding and finding out how they are learning. It gives me a chance to develop, without detracting from my own class time and also gives me the opportunity to observe the technique of others.

Motivate students that they will see value in thier education in there present class.
