I find myself using a lecture style of teaching. However, there are times when I find it more necessary to engage the students because of low attendance or class participation and therefore I must deviate to a style such as group assignments to keep the students involved.
I always encourage and motivate my students to believe in themselves.
I talk to my students about my experience on what subject that we may be discussing for the day.
Hi Joan,
You make a good point about PPs. It is easy to get in the flow and just run through the slides rather than stopping for application or discussion.
Gary
Instructor style set the motavitation of the class and students. An instructor must be able to adjust to ensure that learning is takeing place.
Presently I am using 1-tv, and 2 projectors in the classroom at the same time to create a visual learning experience. I have observed that studentsenjoy visuals that change quite often and from different angles.
The negative aspect of this style of presentation is it is very time consuming in preparation and determining what information will be presented by what media visual.
The use of PowerPoints has several postive points when used correctly. I use them for the purpose of setting a standard of instruction that is consistent will all classes under the same topic. Questions from students that challege what was taught can be addressed when the topic covered was on a slide. PowerPoints keeps the educator on topic which addresses the important points of the book or research.
Visual learners learn from the use of PowerPoints and the use of them should be included in the classroom. The educator should always keep in mind the importance of colors and pictures to draw the students attendtion to the slide. I teach and test on the slides. Students need to be tested on what what addressed and discuseed in the classroom since this is the focal point of the instruction.
I need to be aware of new technologies, new styles in writing and students' needs in relation to these in order to best serve my students.
I find that as I reach the end of my professional teaching life, I am taking a new mindset. I teach and serve adults. Therefore, they pay me. I work for them. With this in mind, I am their teaching "advisor". I manage their learning. We work on learning skills, personal chalanges, how to assess when they have learned "mastered" a topic. I still teach in a lecture style, but I coach, cheerlead and mentor. I treat all learning as a journey from what we know to where we need to go. Students quickley pick up on the concept that 'they learn-I teach. We each have a job. I have found that this aproach yeilds an extremely high student success rate.
My instructional style is one that is a student centered learning format. This focus is primarily focused on the "weak link" model; that is, based on the slowest learner in the class.
Hello Gary,
Thank you for the question and I found reading through the helpful responses/discussions quite inspiring.
My instructional style has to take into account the wide diversity of my online students (age range, educational, professional background and cultural differences…). Since there is no face-to-face, arriving 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled live chat (especially for the 1st Live Chat) and welcoming/acknowledge each student by name as they walk in helps as a warm up. The time spent on getting to know and connect with students make a difference so I invest on socializing. Of course, advance preparation, planning and organization allows me listen and pay attention to students (student-centered approach) and at the same time it makes the session enjoyable for everyone.
Once in session, I used a variety of methods including visually engaging PowerPoint, Polls (subject matter & opinion survey for student feedback on how we are doing), Q&A, and inviting students to chip in with their real life experiences. My subject being Marketing, which is constantly changing and evolving with technology, it cannot be learnt just by the book, so I introduced a “Marketing in the News” series (I pick relevant top media new articles of the week and provide news links, video clips etc. It creates curiosity among students and encourages reading; it also helps me to stay on top of how marketing is evolving and enhance my teaching. Injecting marketing in news or current affairs and inviting students to chip in with what they have picked through the media and share their opinions, suggestions etc. makes the live chat more engaging, meaningful and memorable. Another favorite to enhance my instructional style is using simple, down-to-earth analogies when introducing some of the tough sounding concepts and using humor whenever possible.
Thank you for the opportunity to post my 2 cents.

I try to teach the same way that I like to be taught. I include pictures, videos, stories and examples in my letures as muh as possible. These methods also get the students more involved in the lecture. It often triggers them to talk about their own personal experiences and also ask more questions. It is a great way to get them involved and stay interested in the topic.
I need to open my lectures with exciting impact statements
I enjoy having the adult learners participate in several ways - one is to have additional videos: also some kinesthetic learning when possible. Students also enjoy group work, as well as games to play to aid in learning.
Ask students for their feed back. Consider their suggestions and make necessary adjustments
I was not the powerpoint person, I am athe overhead projector user from many years ago. I found out that with some writing, reading and discussions along with my lecture, the students really retain what they are learning more. I have made many of my lectures written as well as the discussion based lectures. I am forming groups to chat about subjects that are more difficult and it is working out well.
I have found with students of various back grounds and ages, to listen to their needs as a group and then work with them together on their goals. Some of my students work at a slower pace so I work with them together on their course material and the more advanced I give them more challenging materials to work on during my hands on with the slower students and I find them taking time with these students to advance their skills to their level. Powerpoints are fine for certain information but the best is using the hands on approach and rewarding them with an extra break in the class time.
I have been teaching for a number of years. My instructional style varies indifferent classroom setting I am in. Having been in a career college, my instructional style tries to accomodate the student characteristics I am teaching, as well as the subject being discussed. I always bear in mind the background and previous learning experiences the students had, and relate the instructional style I am going to use in order to motivate and enhance the learning process.
Competence in the subject matter and my personality
