The module mentioned the use of language, and I agree regarding the importance of using standard language. Something else is to accept responsibility. When something goes wrong, we can openly admit something like, "I'm sorry I forgot to change the setting to allow you to post your responses. Thank you for the reminder."

Alan,
This is a big point to get across to your students. You have expressed it very well. They need to know that both external and internal (meaning dress, behavior, competence and knowledge) is what is required for career success.

I stress the importance of respecting each other's opinions and learning from each other's experiences as well as from mine, the instructor. My classes are very interactive. We discuss how relevant our case studies are to our study of criminal justice. Every day we discuss current topics and how the students' new found knowledge applies to current local, national and world-wide events. As a role model, I dress professionally and stress the importance of their making a good impression through their demeanor and professional dress, in a work setting. I also encourage public speaking through classroom presentations. Every student is required to give a class presentation which familiarizes the students with formal public speaking. I give each student a standing ovation when their presentation is complete. The class usually joins me in applause. I believe heavily in confidence building. I tell them to believe in themselves and others will as well.
I feel that if we are to be role models for our students we must show them the necessity of being neat and professionally dressed at all times. Because my students are entering the health care field they must understand they will be judged on their competency, at least initially, on their appearance. Also, I feel as an instructor I must convey the need for them to be able to listen, communicate, and speak correctly to their patients so they can determine what the patient needs, and how to best supply those needs.
Ron,
All good ways to send a message to your students that yes indeed you are a professional educator that is excited and prepared to teach.

I think by being early and conducting yourself in a professional maner at all times will set a good role model for the students.
As an instructor, some of the ways in which I can model behaviors that will help students succeed are to first, dress in a professional fashion, speak in a professional manner, and also make sure that I am on time for lecture.
Brian,
Your experiences and your professional attitude are both very powerful models for students to observe and follow.

I model behaviors by demonstrating a real world working atmosphere. I working in the automotive repair industry for 23 years very successfully and I teach from that point of view.
You have to behave on the highest level of professionalism. Regardless of how rough and tumble the industry an instructor came from might have been, you were still regarded as a professional in your field. That has to carry over into the instructor realm. But now instead of behaving like the idustry, you have behave as that professional. No more gruff language. dress for success. Wear the uniform with a sense of pride. Clean up all of the old "rough edges" and shine.
Elayne,
Right you are relating to being a model for them. They need to have someone in the field they can compare their growth to as they move through the course.

One of the most essential ways to model behaviors that will help my students succeed is to be an influential model for them.
It is important for them to see me motivated, dedicated, and sincere about delivering lectures to them. Being open and honest to them also is beneficial.
Daniel,
This modeling of professional behavior and character is so important for the students to observe. You are practicing what you are advocating when you talk with them through your actions. Keep up the good work.

As an instructor I like to conduct myself as being as professional as possible. This would not only include dressing professionally but also acting professional. Making sure every student receives the same amount of attention and respect. In the massage field many students will become frustrated when a muscle will not relax as quickly as they feel it should. This helps the students when I am patience with them as I try to guide them to use other strokes or methods to receive the result they are looking for.
For instructors to be good role models to their students is to be professional in appearance, punctual, and sincere.
Great ansswer. As an instructor you are probably and unknowingly introducing your students to the professional world to which they aspire but do not yet know the rules that govern interaction in such a world. Be punctual and they will learn to be punctual. Show passion for what you do and they will be passionate about their work. I always tell my students how active and demanding the workplace is and how they need to prepare for the challenging workplace. I have dared to ask them to use me as a sure means to success. I cannot say this to them (do the talk) and not "walk the walk".
by showing your professionalism, time management, flexibilty and punctuality can be good role models as well.
Within the medicial field the first thing you can do is look the part. You can also show professional behavior. Students not only learn from the text book but also by example. Routines also help student learn success in the medical field.
Mary,
The social development that comes with technical knowledge and skill acquisition is just as important to career success. Good job of providing these opportunities to your students.
