The learning enviroment plays a major role in the instuctional process because it is the atmosphere in which the learning and teaching process takes place. It is important that the learning enviroment is organized and well structured so that the proper teachings are able to be administered, presented, understood and absorbed by the students. The better structured the learning environment is,the easier it is for information to be delivered by the instructor as well as understood by the students.

I think using technology to demonstrate how it can streamline an assignment is helpful. For example, I like to demonstrate how effective use of a journal database produces faster and more relevant results than a Google search. Focusing on the research objective ( completing a research paper) is an effective approach as well.

I believe that the environment should be comfortable. If the environment is a comfortable on the student can learn better. No matter what the learning style is if the student is unvomfortable it shows in their learning process.

A classroom environment must accommodate students so they may participate in comfort and security. The environment must be neat and clean. I don't think students should eat in class.

The physical environment should be comfortable and room set-up should be arranged so that participants are welcome and encouraged to be actively involved. The room arrangement should be considered for determining if the students can see and hear as well as stimulate group involvement.

The role of the learning environment is crucial in conveying the realism of what the outside or working environment will entail to prepare students for real world scenarios and circumstances. Granted this can be quite challenging, yet role playing, mock set ups and sharing/reflecting on past experiences provide the learner with realism.

Hi All,
What are some key aspects of environmental planning that help you be more effective in your teaching?
Thanks for your input on this.

Hi Patricia,
Tough situation for you and your students. When I have been forced to teach in such settings I try to make a game out of it. I have my students share with the class suggestions for solving the problems. Then we vote on the best solutions and give prizes. It doesn't change the temperature but it helps the students to move beyond the environmental issues to some extent.

We have environmental issues in our classes. Either it is too hot or freezing cold. Either my students are sluggish and sleepy or chaffing their hands to maintain circulation? This is out of my hands, the college is doing their best but old systems have their issues. I try what I can, a space heater, give them activities to keep them moving. Any other advise?

I believe the learning enviroment should be effect for students

The learning environment is a key element in the instructional process. The learning environment must be one of trust and acceptance. The classroom can be enhanced through the application of a sociocultural approach to emphasize learning from exprience and discourse.

Hi Anne,
Thank you for sharing this example of how the physical setting impacts the learning of students. We know it but sometimes the administration forgets how important it really is to student success. Once your students could spread out and feel comfortable they were good to go with the class. Just common sense but sometimes forgotten.

Hi Mellisa,
The more encouragement you can give students as they return to school after being out for a while the better for them. They need to feel that they can be successful if they put forth the effort.

The environment is very important to student success. I had a large class put into a small classroom. I had to convince my director that was not conducive to learning as the students felt cramped and my ability to get to the student was hampered due to book bags. Once we got into a larger room the whole tone and atmosphere of the class improved.

Hi Edwin,
Good points about how much the environment sets the stage for successful learning. Sometimes we forget how important this is and how we need to make sure the setting is supportive to our students.

Hi Brian,
What are examples of how it teaches you to manage your time? Thanks for your input on this.

Hi Judith,
I like the use of job shadowing as a learning tool. This really gets the students fired up about their studies and helps them see the value of the courses they are taking. You are right about the discussions that come out of these experiences. The students come back ready to talk about what they have seen and experienced.

Students need a positive environment to help them better focus on the content of the course. Many students are also nervous about returning to school and providing them with a nuturing and supportive environment will help alleviate this concern and allow them to do better.

The learning environment is a critical part of instructional presentation - establishes the scene, stage, setting in which the instructor will perform his/her days lecture.
The rooms; furniture arrangement, lighting, acoustics, smells, and especially cleanliness, all contribute to the student success. A comfortable and relaxed learning environment is just as important to understanding and retention as presentation.

It plays an important part in the adult learner; the site needs to have adequate lights, adequate materials for the students to be able to learn the content.
