Hi Mary,
Simple and yet highly effective. Instructors need to focus on some of these kinds of activities so the first impression that students create of the course and the instructor is of support and caring.
Gary

It is important to make a positive first impression because that is what a person remembers most. The idea of greeting students at the classroom door is a great and simple way of saying, "Welcome." and shows you care about the members of your class.

Hi Nicole,
Good point. The first class meeting really is a "job interview" between you and the students. Based upon the initial reactions between everyone the stage will be set for the upcoming class. Everyone show want to do well in the "interview".
Gary

First impressions are powerful and set the stage for everything that follows.

Hi Nicole,
Right you are. It is so much easier to build upon that good first impression rather than spend time trying to fix a poor first impression.
Gary

I agree, little things like a smile and eye contact count. Have you ever had a conversation with someone who does not make eye contact, it is very unsettling. You know something is wrong and it can make you uneasy. Students need to be put at ease, the first day of a new class is stressful enough, but a teacher who is uncomfortable will make the class uncomfortable.

Its about the entire package, energy, attitude, apperence, etc. Basically it is like being on a job interview, every detail is noted.

Making a positive impression is important because it sets the tone for the hole class. We mignt not like to admit it however we all make judgements on first impressions; and it is much harder to change that impression then it is to leave a good impression from the start.

Hi Adam,
Good point about making a positive first impression. What are some strategies you use in making sure that you make a positive first class impression.
Gary

I think a positive first impression is very important for the students to view you as a role model. This will also help them to view you as someone who they can learn from.

this is important because it is the impression that your students will have of you for the rest of the time that they spend with you. For me that is very important because I h=may have these students two or three times in their time that they are with the insitute.

Hi Nancye,
You are right the mark with how you approach being a professional. This I know makes a major impact on how the students see you as the educational leader.
Gary

I try to make a good first impression by looking and acting professional--lab coat, etc.I also smile, make eye contact, modulate my voice, and stand in front of the class rather than sitting.I try to be concise in the info I'm providing & always give the students some info about me & my experience in the field.

Hi David,
You are right about the need to model the expectations of the field and the behaviors required for career success. For many students this is new information and they need to observe and learn what it takes to be successful in their field from a skill, social and character standpoint.
Gary

First impresions are not replacable for a long time. You need to look students in the eyes when you greet them (with a smile).I would practice and ask someone for there opinion before I start my first few classes.

First impressions are very important in all phases of life....in the work enviroment, self confidence will stand out...being a model and displaying good positive first impressions, I think, will go a long way in developing a good work character in the learner....

Hi Anthony,
Good plan for having a very successful first day of class. By creating a positive first impression you have set the stage for getting the students settled into the course and ready to experience the upcoming instruction.
Gary

A postive first impression is important becuase it sets the stage for the rest of the course. Students do not know what to expect, so if you are prepared and have the confidance and knowledge the students will see that and be more at ease for the first day. If you follow the guidlines listed in this module you will also put them at ease becuase you will cover thier concerns and fears. It also helps to establish the instructor as the authority and the go to person for help.

Hi Martha,
What do you think makes the biggest first impression when you start a new course?
Gary

Making a good first impression sets the stage for the clas, it is a must to look professional and have a positive attitude.
